What Keeps You Up at Night?
A Message from our President

Have you had a chance to check out our new and improved website and web platform? If not, you definitely will want to stop on by here... It's one of the really important initiatives that volunteer Board of Directors is spearheading for 2015.  There's still more to be done to the site, so keep coming back - for news, events, and of course, our HR Career Opportunities.

This month's issue of the HR Leader is filled with some really pressing topics - you know, those things that keep us up at night - on the minds of many HR professionals including work/life balance, employee engagement, reinventing performance management, and how to leverage HR technology to work smarter while managing the bottom the line, even if you're a smaller company. Furthermore, in the article titled New Work World Requires HR Overhaul, all of us are called to action to understand why a study conducted by Deloitte on Human Capital warns that "HR is not keeping up with the change in business."

Finally, on a more serious note, this month's upcoming lunch meeting, presented by Timothy Dimhoff, Founder and President of SACS Consulting and Investigative Services, will address an issue that is no longer just the domain of HR professionals - workplace violence and its prevention.  Mr. Dimhoff, in a common-sense and non-alarmist approach, will provide tangible strategies for protecting ourselves and our employees.  That's also why this issue includes related articles on this topic, with compelling statistics on why addressing and preventing workplace violence must be a leadership imperative. We look forward to seeing you for this important event.

Workplace Violence, Bullying,
and Active Shooters:
New Trends and New Solutions

We like to think that the workplace is safe. But in reality, Americans are bringing their problems and violence to the workplace. From bullying and simple assaults to unexpected aggression and active shooters, no organization is completely safe.

Timothy Dimoff brings his national certification as an A.L.i.C.E Instructor (Alert, Lockdown, inform, Counter, Evacuate) and offers preparation and solutions to schools, churches, and businesses who want to be prepared should an active shooter attack their building. Mr. Dimoff will explain new strategies such as environmental design, technology, communication, law enforcement response and informative action as the new procedures to increase the odds of survival for those under attack.

March Meeting Recap: Talent Acquisition
Panelists Shared Insights on the Value of Partnering with Third Party Agencies

In this unique panel presentation, sponsored by Workplace Staffing Services, March attendees learned about the value of partnering with third-party agencies.  Representing executive (retained) search, temporary and temp to hire staffing services, and contingent search services, the panelists explained why organizations should consider using these specialists, regardless of whether or not they have in-house recruiting personnel.  Many thanks to our facilitator, Katherine Burik, for her engaging dialogue and to all of our panelists for their expertise and insight!

Over 80 Percent of Active Shooter Incidents Occur at Work
Chilling Insight from the FBI's First Study of this Difficult Topic

Of 160 active shooter incidents in the United States between 2000 and 2013, over 80 percent (132) occurred at work, according to the FBI's first study of the subject. The agency defined an active shooter incident as when an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area through the use of firearms.  Most of the attacks took place on workdays, particularly Tuesdays and Fridays, with a fairly equal spread among remaining days of the week. Saturdays were the least likely day for such incidents to occur. Read more on SHRM's website.

Resources for Workplace Bullying
Costs of Workplace Bullying Add Up... In Many Ways

According the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI), workplace bullying is repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators. It is abusive conduct that is :

WBI is the first and only U.S. organization dedicated to the eradication of workplace bullying that combines help for individuals, research, books, public education, training for professionals-unions-employers, legislative advocacy, and consulting solutions for organizations. In 2014, WBI conducted a U.S. Workplace Bullying Survey, addressing the national prevalence of this conduct. Read the Survey results. It's eye-opening, to say the least.

Biometrics in the Workplace
by C.R. Wright, HR Executive Online

As criminal enterprises have become more sophisticated, so have corporate security measures. American companies are increasingly turning to biometrics technology ("life measurements") such as facial and voice recognition, hand and iris scans, finger and palm prints, and other forms of identification for various security and business purposes... While biometrics continues to emerge in the workplace, one group is pushing against corporate America's use of biometric technology in the workplace: employees. Smaller Companies on an HR Tech Buying Spree
by Sarah Fister Gale, Workforce.com

HR technology is at the top of the shopping list for IT leaders this year, especially those in smaller firms. According to a 2015 report from The Starr Conspiracy Intelligence Unit, a marketing agency, 53 percent of companies with more than 1,000 employees plan to invest in human resources technology software this year, but that number jumps to 60 percent among firms with fewer than 100 employees. Check out this compelling article that might just provide some solutions for companies looking to leverage the value of their HR professionals with supportive - and cost effective - technology.

The New World of Work Requires HR Overhaul
"Yawning Gap" Between What Business Leaders Want and Capabilities of HR to Deliver

By Dinah Wisenberg Brin - The recent Deloitte 2015 Global Human Capital Trends report warns that "HR is not keeping up with the pace of change in business." According to the report by Josh Bersin and Deloitte Consulting LLP colleagues, for HR organizations, this new world "challenges our existing people practices: how we evaluate and manage people and how we engage and develop teams; how we select leaders and how they operate." This will be a critical year for HR teams, a time for creativity "and a fundamental reimagining of the practices HR leaders have used for years."  A must-read for all HR Professionals! Supply Chain Success Begins with an Engaged Workforce
Special Contributor: Adam Cobb, Certified Human Capital Strategist; Halogen Software

In the manufacturing world, operations must run like clockwork. If any one area falls behind schedule, it will impact every link in the supply chain, from assembly and packaging to warehousing and logistics. Broken links can be costly to manufacturing firms in terms of both the top and bottom line.

Special Contribution

Keeping the supply chain seamlessly moving along depends not only on the state of the equipment, but also the state of the workforce. In other words, supply chains are only as good as the people who play a part in keeping them going. This underscores the need for every employee from the shop floor to head office to be focused on and aligned with their company's corporate strategy. Without focus and the alignment, productivity can suffer and employee turnover can rise, which isn't an ideal situation in an industry facing a looming skills gap. Find out why success starts with an engaged workforce...
