Public Issues Facilitation Workshop

The Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy's annual Public Issues Facilitation (PIF) workshop was March 2-4. Since 2006, ICDD has offered the public workshop every year but one.  Plans are already underway for the 2016 workshop.  It is scheduled for March 7-9 on the Kansas State University campus.

The ICDD PIF workshop is unique among introductory workshops.  Participants devote hours to facilitation practice followed by reflection. The workshop covers the fundamentals of preparation and conducting a public issue forum, which include:

  • How to choose a discussion method appropriate for the topic and the public forum purpose.
  • Facilitation best practices such as asking good questions and moderating small group discussion.
  • How to recognize early signs of conflict and prevent escalation.

Rural Grocery Tool Kit

The Rural Grocery Tool Kit is designed to provide resources to those considering establishing a grocery store and existing rural grocery store owners.

If you are planning on opening a rural grocery store, that's great! The Tool Kit identifies five crucial steps to address before opening a store, they are: Assessing the market, getting started, legal requirements and licensing, financing, and marketing your business.

For existing rural grocery store owners, the Tool Kit provides information on six key facets of store ownership:  Market assessment, business organization, financial, business management, food suppliers, and marketing.

The Tool Kit is full of resources, tools, information, and contacts to assist you. See for yourself by clicking here!

Kansas State University established the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy (ICDD) in 2004 to enhance democracy through improved community deliberation. Soon after, the Center for Engagement and Community Development (CECD) was created by K-State in 2006 to connect the resources of the university to significant issues of public need facing Kansas and communities worldwide. To help sustain rural communities due to growing economic problems, CECD launched the Rural Grocery Initiative (RGI) in 2008.
