Battle of Rivas - April 11th 1856

After losing the Battle of Santa Rosa on March 20th 1856, the filibusters led by William Walker, went to the city of Rivas, Nicaragua. They took over the 'Meson', a strategic point where they wanted to ambush the Costa Rican army and take them prisoners together with president Mora.

What happened on April 11th 1856?

On this day, the army of Costa Rica and the filibusters faced each other for the second time, with a possitive result for the Costa Rican army.

History points alajuelense Juan Santamar?a, known as tamborcillo and who was part of the Costa Rican army, as responsible for burning the 'Meson', that finally made the filibusters flee the place.

Once the battle was over, the Costa Rican soldiers returned home due to the cholera epidemic that killed many people.

With support of the British, the Costa Rican army took control of the San Juan River towards the end of December, and this prevented the filibusters from receiving any reinforcements. In May of 1860 William Walker died in Trujillo, Honduras.

As results of the Battles of Santa Rosa and Rivas, the country suffered great economic and human losses, but freedom, peace and sovereignty remained intact.

Schedule for Route 606 Guacimal - Santa Elena

We share the new schedule available for Route 606 Guacimal - Santa Elena.  Please take note of this when planning your itinerary and to avoid any drawbacks.

 The 'three-wattled bellbirds' are HERE!

We invite you to enjoy the Bellbird season in Monteverde and to watch them in the forest and listen to their unique and beautiful singing.

Fun fact: just like the inhabitants of a region can be recognized by their particular accent, the Bellbird (Procnias tricarunculatus) also changes his song depending on the area where it lives. After many years of studying, now it is possible to distinguish between at least three "dialects": one of Talamanca, another of Monteverde and of Nicaragua.

See you soon!
