The Prophet Muhammad and Charlie Hebdo

"Make your character good for the people."
- Prophet Muhammad (s) as narrated Al-Muwatta, Volume 47, Hadith 1

The primary purpose and mission of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was to be a source of compassion and justice for all of humanity. As followers of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the most fundamental obligation of Muslims is to embody the compassionate nature of the prophet (pbuh). One of the main traits of the prophet that has been documented in countless Hadiths (recorded sayings of the prophet) is the sweetness and sincerity of his character and the magnanimity of his ethics and his moral high ground. His deep understanding of the human condition always made a lasting and transformative impact with those he interacted with.

The patient and compassionate character of the Prophet is well exemplified in the story of his neighbor, an old woman who made a daily habit of insulting Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by throwing animal entrails on him as he passed by her house to get to the mosque. The Prophet (pbuh) endured her insults silently and patiently, without displaying any anger or annoyance. At one point, the Prophet started noticing that the old woman was no longer there and was later told that she had fallen ill. Upon learning this, the Prophet (pbuh) went to visit her and offered her any assistance that she may have needed. The old woman was worried that the Prophet (pbuh) had come to take revenge. However, she soon recognized his genuine concern for her well-being. By witnessing his compassion and gentle mannerisms, the old woman became convinced that the Prophet was indeed a true apostle of God and later became Muslim.

If the Prophet (pbuh) were alive today, would he advise Muslims to act and react with compassion, tolerance, and patience towards the insulting cartoons of Charlie Hebdo in the same way as he reacted towards the insults of the old woman? Probably so!
