FIRST FRIDAY BREAKFAST and BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
Ranger Hays Tells About Agency at First Friday Breakfast...sponsored by Ginn Motor Company.
Kathy Mudd / The Monticello News
Thursday, Mar 12, 2015
Ranger 1st Class Freddie Hays talked to the group gathered for first Friday breakfast last week, and presented an overview of the smallest state law enforcement agency in the state.

The Department of Natural Resources conservation officers are generally referred to as game wardens.

He said there are 195 officers in seven regions...the same number as in 1988. It is also the oldest state law enforcement agency, founded in 1911, before the Georgia State Patrol or Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

He said it cost nearly $116,000 to hire, equip, and train one ranger. Rangers attend 11 week basic mandate school, just like any law enforcement officer. Then they attend a 12 week advanced ranger academy. Lastly they spend 18 weeks with an experienced ranger.

Officer Hays shared statistics for 2014. He said the agency has three areas of service-law enforcement, public education and community involvement.

Ranger Hays was recently named investigative ranger of the year, and he explained what he had done to get that accolade. He said that Facebook is a violator's worst nightmare, saying that's how he got a lead on the poachers he caught.

Officer Hays told about the different divisions that work within the DNR, such as the Critical Incident Reconstruction Team, that investigates fatalities, serious injuries, and shooter/victim situations. There is also a Critical Action Team that is dispatched through the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), a Child Abduction Response Team, and a Body Recovery Team.  Rangers spent 4,600 hours last year helping other public safety agencies.

The breakfast was sponsored by Ginn Motor Co., in Covington a Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce member. The next first Friday breakfast will be Friday, June 5, at 8 a.m. at the Visitors' Center.

Kathy Mudd / The Monticello News
Thursday, March 12, 2015

Southern Crescent Technical College (SCTC) hosted a business after hours Thursday, March 5, and those attending heard from the college president, Dr. Randall Peters, and the school's foundation chair Jack Smith.

Mr. Smith explained that the foundation is the fund raising arm of the college, and does internal and external fund raising. The funds are used for scholarships and facilities.

He spoke briefly on the Georgia Film Institute which the school has begun, and talked about the link between education and economics.

Dr. Peters talked more about the film institute, and the ground-breaking work the college is doing. He said there is no other program like it in the state, and talked about hosting people from The Walking Dead and Rectify in the  building just last week. He talked about the economic impact of the film industry on the state's economy.

Dr. Peters said that the school offers classes in three areas-those for credit, ones specific to business and industry, and adult education.

He also talked about how agile the technical school system is and how it can create a program fairly quickly when a need is seen. An example was water quality technician. Right now only once school in the state offers the training. So, SCTC is going to become the second school in the state.

He talked about the new logistics management program they have. "We are more agile to create a program than anyone else," he said.

Dr. Peters talked about the relationship between education and economic development and talked about his staff that works with business and industry to train people. He talked about the relationship between SCTC and four-year colleges in the state, and how SCTC can help those students as well.

He said that when you give people options, it changes their life in a generational way.

He concluded by saying, overall, he said the state of the college is good.
