Rio Grande Valley's City Secretaries Association 

The City of South Padre Island hosted the Lower Rio Grande Valley City Secretaries Association meeting this week. City Secretary Susan Hill and Assistant City Secretary Marta Martinez attended along with city secretaries from McAllen, Pharr, Pe�itas, Alton and Elsa. The guest speaker was our very own City Manager Bill DiLibero, who spoke on Senate Bill 353.




"Toto & Harry" on South Padre Island

 

Public Information Officer & Film Commissioner Adrian Rodriguez met with Sony Pictures Germany and SPI PD to finalize plans for them to shoot their show "Toto & Harry" on South Padre Island during Spring Break 2015. Officer A. Banda & Sergeant M. Ochoa will be featured in the show. 

 

 

 

Traffic Studies on Padre Blvd.

 

City Manager Bill DiLibero, Assistant City Manager Darla Jones, Police Chief Randy Smith, Mayor Patel, and Council Member Alita Bagley met with District Engineer Toribio Garza and Area Engineer Juan Bosquez of Tx. DOT to discuss traffic studies on Padre Blvd. Meeting was held on Thursday, February 19, 2015. 

 

 
Cyclobia Brownsville Planning Meeting

 

Assistant City Manager Darla Jones, Police Chief Randy Smith, and Permit - Parks & Rec Program Manager Mary K. Hancock attended the Cyclobia Brownsville Planning meeting in Brownsville on Tuesday, February 17th to learn more about the logistics of organizing this community wellness event.

 

 

I ? SPI 

 

The I ? SPI Campaign concluded on February 14th. We would like to thank residents who took advantage of the extended time-frame allowed to place brush and bulky items on the right-of-way for pick up.

 
Sidewalks & Driveways

 

JMJ Isla Developers is scheduled to begin the sidewalk project along Padre Boulevard between W. Tarpon and W. Marlin next week. Project should be completed in two weeks. They will then begin work at the Visitors Center. 

 
Street Paving Project

 

The bid documents and plans for Phase III of the Gulf Boulevard and E. Sunset Street Paving Project are available for pick up at the Public Works office. The date for the Bid Opening is March 4th at 10:00 am and a pre-bid meeting is scheduled for February 26th at 3:00pm at City Hall. 

 
Routine Maintenance

 

To help with drainage, public works crews have been working on clearing grass off the right-of-way on several streets. We will be contracting back hoe services next week to continue addressing some drainage issues on the eastside streets.

Recycling
Recyclable items can be taken to Old City Hall every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Items that can be recycled are:
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard
  • Office Paper
  • Aluminum
  • Tin
  • Plastic
To offer a better recycling service please:
  • Compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced in size. This helps us use the most amount of space in the bins.
  • Remove any food, liquid, metal fasteners, adhesive materials or other items that may contaminate the whole load.






Animal Control
Friends of Animal Rescue operates the South Padre Island Recovery Center and Animal Shelter. The shelter is licensed by the State of Texas as an animal shelter and quarantine facility.

The shelter is located at 4908 Padre Blvd and open to the public Tuesday-Sunday from 10 AM to 4:30 PM.  We do make arrangements to meet owners after hours if necessary in order to reunite pets with their families. Friends of Animal Rescue can be reached on their 24 hour hotline at 956-772-1171. Animals that are not claimed within 7-10 days are vetted (including Spay/Neuter) and adopted out to loving homes.

Incentive Policy
The South Padre Island Economic Development Corporation and the City of South Padre Island have approved an incentive policy in order to assist qualified new and existing businesses and to benefit the economic climate on the Island. Businesses can apply for property tax abatements as well as sales tax abatements for improvements that will contribute to the economy of South Padre Island. The City and the EDC will evaluate the applications to determine if they meet the established criteria for the programs.
