In the months ahead we are inviting our whole congregation into the spiritual practice of discerning our direction for the years ahead. A series of holy conversations will provide opportunities for prayerful reflection, creative dreaming and meaningful dialogue. These conversations will inspire and inform a clear sense of mission and a powerful vision to bring transformation and blessing to many more people in the years ahead.
You are invited to participate in an important online Congregational Life Survey.
In preparation for our first of three congregational forums on Saturday, March 14, we are conducting an online survey of our congregation. Although the survey typically takes less than 15 minutes to complete, it will provide some of the most comprehensive information we have ever gathered about congregational life at MCC of Washington DC. It is very important for everyone to participate in this online survey. If you have yet to take this survey, please take a moment now.
Here is the link to our online survey:
Please complete the survey no later than Noon on March 9. Your views and voice are vital as we continue to think and pray about what God is calling us to become and be doing in the years ahead!
With Gratitude,

GLORY
"For those who have no voice, we ask you to speak. For those who feel unworthy, we ask you to pour your love out in waterfalls of tenderness. For those who live in pain, we ask you to bathe them in the river of your healing. "
~Maya Angelou
Never mind the final outcome of the Academy Awards, many people believe that Ava DuVernay's film Selma was the best picture of 2014. It is still in theatres and if you've not seen it, I highly recommend you make plans while it is still on the big screen.
One of the many poignant elements of the film is the song "Glory" which received the Oscar for Best Original Song. (CLICK HERE TO PLAY GLORY) In "Glory," John Legend and Common create a masterpiece that describes the story of the Selma March as a giving of self for a higher cause, a higher purpose, a higher glory.
The song echoes the glory of the invitation of Jesus in this Sunday's Gospel for the Second Sunday in Lent from Mark 8:34-35: "All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. All who want to save their lives will lose them. But to all who lose their lives because of me and because of the good news will save them."
Fifty years ago in Selma thousands embodied the heart of Jesus' call. They faced brutality, arrest and even death in their work for equality. Their sacrifice was for a greater glory. As the song says:
"Selma's now for every man, woman and child
Even Jesus got his crown in front of a crowd
They marched with the torch, we gon' run with it now
Never look back, we done gone hundreds of miles. . .
One day, when the glory comes
it will be ours, it will be ours. . ."
Lent is a time to go deeper into the power and paradox of glory, not through strength and domination but through opening ourselves to higher callings. In my message this Sunday, we'll look further at how Jesus redefined glory and how we can open ourselves to share in that glory for the greater good. See you Sunday.
Faithfully,
Rev. Dwayne

"These are the words of the Lord God:
Now I myself will ask after my sheep
and go in search for them. . .and rescue them,
no matter where they were scattered
in dark and cloudy days. . .
I will search for the lost,
recover the straggler,
bandage the hurt,
strengthen the sick,
leave the healthy and strong to play."

MCCDC Celebrates Women's History Month
Why Women's History?
Each time a girl opens a book and reads a womanless history, she learns she is worth less. ~ Myra Pollack Sadker. History helps us learn who we are, but when we don't know our own history, our power and dreams are immediately diminished. Multicultural American women are overlooked in most mainstream approaches to U.S. history, so the National Women's History Project champions their accomplishments and leads the drive to write women back into history.
Recognizing the achievements of women in all facets of life - science, community, government, literature, art, sports, medicine - has a huge impact on the development of self-respect and new opportunities for girls and young women. The 2015 theme of the month is "Weaving the Stories of Women's Lives".

Give to the AV Ministry Fund. MCCDC is revamping the Sanctuary sound system, a new audio board and system, and new cameras so we can start to webcast our Sunday services to the community and the shut-in.
The cost of the project is $95,500. The Board has committed $42,850 to the project and we have raised $33,513 for a total of $76,363. We are $19,137 away from our goal. Help us make this happen.
