St. Anthony of Padua~ Dayton, Ohio E-Brief
5/8/2015
There are quite a few important dates coming up in the months ahead. Please pay special attention to this Sunday's bulletin, and get ready to mark your calendar for the Pro-life Rummage Sale, Vacation Bible School, St. Anthony Feast Day and Family Picnic, 100th Anniversary of St. Anthony School, and Oktoberfest. Each parishioner is a vital part of the parish family and Church. Each one of us help to make St. Anthony Parish and School the place to encounter Christ in East Dayton. We have all helped to "build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive," So please make sure to come to these events, invite friends and family, neighbors, those in need of Christ, because "here the cross shall stand as witness and as symbol of God's grace; here as one we claim the faith of Jesus: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place."

Love, Love, Love
Come to Mass this weekend; you will find out the very reason for your existence. Actually, we can tell you that right now. (But still, you should come to Mass anyway). As the late American Psychologist, Erich Fromm, once stated "Love is the only sane and satisfactory answer to the problem of human existence."

Love. You exist because of love and you exist for love.

As you will hear in the Second Reading at Mass this Sunday from 1 John Chapter 4,  "Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love."

God is love. He created us out of love and in turn He wants us to love. Actually, He doesn't just want us to love, He commands us to love. In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus says, "This is my commandment: love one another as I love you." And, "This I command you: love one another."
Twice- two times- Jesus commands us to love one another. To love one another as He has loved us. Love like Jesus has loved us? How is that possible? How do we do that?! Well, Jesus tells us that too in the very same Gospel. He says, "As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love." Keep His Commandments and remain in His love. We love one another by keeping the Commandments and by remaining in Christ's love by praying, attending Mass, and participating in the sacraments.

Love. You exist because of love and you exist for love. And God is love. Remain in His love.

Out of Habit
When was the last time you saw a nun in habit? Does it really make a difference if priests decide to swap out their clerical collars for polo shirts more often than not? In her article, "Cheating the Habit of Being," Elizabeth Scalia argues that the Christian witness of wearing religious attire could have a profound effect. Scalia states, "The scratchy and starched architectural gear of past eras is impractical to the twenty-first century, but at a time when Christian witness is often received cynically, as caricature or hysteria, the adopting of the simplest of habits would give silent testimony of lives unified in purpose, being lived in simplicity and dignity, for something greater than material or political concerns. Such witness may well be necessary for the life of the world." To read Scalia's full article click here.

Message of the Week St. Pio
In darkness, at times of tribulation and distress of the spirit, Jesus is with you. In such a state you see nothing but darkness, but I can assure on God's behalf that the light of the Lord is all around you and pervades your spirit...You see yourself forsaken and I assure that Jesus is holding you tighter than ever to His divine Heart.
- St. Pio of Pietrelcina
