Letters from the Perch

Dear Chamber Members,

I love the month of May - a time when everything awakens after a long winter slumber. The trees bud, grass turns green and flowers prepare for their annual fashion show. The sandhills and other winged world travelers have journeyed home and are busy feasting on last year's corn in local fields, and I saw the osprey flying over Brighton yesterday in the late afternoon sky. Mother Nature is active in the month of May. Even my home birds at the Chamber building are busy fashioning their nests in preparation of their offspring.

May is also an extremely busy month at the Chamber. We are packed with great events, and there's definitely something for everyone. Take a look in this newsletter for more information.

The Chamber Speakers Bureau will be on the GBACOC website on 5/15/15. The Bureau consists of many individuals who are experts or authorities in given areas. Feel free to contact these speakers if you believe they would be an asset to your company. We will formally launch the Chamber Speakers Bureau in June, with a presentation from Darren Johnston, Executive Business and President of Continuous Improvement Coaching. More details will follow with specific details of his presentation. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Chamber Speakers Bureau, please complete the application and return it to me at your earliest convenience.  SPEAKERS BUREAU APPLICATION

The Professional Women's Club of Michigan through the Chamber is very successful. I have been asked by male Chamber members to create a Chamber Men's Club. If you have any thoughts on this, please contact me at [email protected]. If there is a need for this group, I will promise to make it happen!

As always, if there is anything that you need from me, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Women Face Unique Retirement Challenges

By PNC Brighton Branch Manager Barbara Platt-Moss

We're Living Longer Ladies!

So what are you doing about it?

Women, some argue, are natural investors, and by noting the lessons of their social and cognitive economic decisions, they can take advantage of these innate talents to invest successfully.  Increasingly, many of us can expect to live longer than previous generations.  Nationally, on average, we outlive our counterparts by five years (80.5 versus 75.5 years old).

So life is good then, if we're living longer, however it comes with a challenge: how to finance that long life and retain a peace of mind.  Time and time again, I tell women - be "hands on" with your portfolio.

Study after study concludes that women's portfolios outperform their male counterparts over every time period measured, and yet, according to a 2012 study by the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI), only four in 10 women who are at least 55 years old believe they have done a good job in planning financially for their retirement years.

Additionally, women generally earn less than men in the course of a lifetime. This is not only because of the well-documented income discrepancy between the genders, but also because of the opportunity costs when women leave the workforce to care for family. Among respondents to the 2012 IRI survey, 33% of working women who became mothers decreased their hours; 29% passed up a promotion, training opportunity or assignment; 20% switched to part-time work; and 16% quit their jobs.  So, over 30 years, these issues translate to a 25% to 30% income shortfall compared to a male worker's with the same investing pattern.

Be smart, take charge and let your investments work for you - ask yourself:

-       What is your exit strategy? Are you equipped to finance a long, healthy life?

-       Have you thought about working beyond age 65?  Know the pros and cons.

-       What is the plan for sufficient healthcare?

-       Are you familiar with your portfolio, especially in the preparation of life-changing events such as the death of a spouse, living wills or divorce?

Although women face unique challenges when it comes to retirement planning, there are more resources available to support women's investment and retirement decisions than ever before.   I hope you take the time to review your strategy, speak to a professional and plan for a long, healthy life.

Taking The Next Step

By Raymond Waller, Director

Brighton Hospital / Brighton Center for Recovery

As the lead administrator for Brighton Hospital, I have the privilege of directing the nation's 2nd oldest hospital devoted to the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction.  On our 92 acre campus, lives change for the better in profound ways every day; something I'm very proud of.  At times I'm asked "so, who do you serve? And what is the makeup of your clientele?"  Well, we serve:  soccer moms; factory workers; doctors and lawyers; suburban, rural and urban residents; CEO's and CFO's; 18 to 30 year olds still living at home; millionaire business owners; and beyond.  There is no one particular demographic.  It truly is across the board.

I can share that of all these groups, the one that's showing the fastest growth in drug use is 18 to 30 year olds (especially 18 to 25 year olds).  This begs the question "what positive step(s) can we take as a community to reverse this trend?"  First, we can benefit by understanding when children start using drugs, and what channels of drug abuse children are initially accessing.  The initial channels are primarily:  cigarettes; alcohol; marijuana; and prescription pain killing drugs (often called opiates).  When are they starting?  Generally between the ages of 11 and 14 - basically middle school age.

So what can we do to help?  We can recognize that a relatively small group of young people using drugs and alcohol early on [i.e. ages of 11 through 14] becomes a much larger group of young people using drugs and alcohol just a few years later [ages 15 through 18].  And For every child that doesn't start using early on, we probably end up saving one or two other children who would have started using because of the example of their peers.  Thus, by preventing initial use by a relative few early, we can prevent the need for drug treatment for the "many" later.

So how do we accomplish this?  The solution truly lies in a community response.  Each adult that chooses not to use tobacco unwittingly helps some observant 11 year-old turn away from the gateway of cigarettes.  Each adult that destroys pain killing pills they don't need helps a young person turn away from the gateway of prescription pain medication.  And each adult that knows how to have a good time without the use of mind altering substances helps a child learn that you can have an enjoyable time without the use of alcohol or marijuana.

Our daily choices thus have an impact on opening or closing the gateways to drug addiction.  It's always the right time to help build a community culture against drugs.
