Sage In-District Services
Every year child study teams and districts identify students whose needs are beyond what the structure of the traditional school and child study team can meet. Child study team professionals understand what these discouraged students need but also recognize that they lack the time and resources necessary for the most effective intervention. Sage In-District Services is designed to fill the gap in service between traditional in-school support and an out-of-district placement. Our skilled clinical team will work with the child study team, academic staff and administration to provide a seamless counseling experience for the student. With the right therapeutic relationship and counseling, students will gain the support, strategy and insight they need in order to make progress in school. Sage In- District Services brings both the educational and counseling expertise that are the essential components of successful school-based intervention. The month of January was academically eventful as it included mid-term exams, the end of the second marking period, and parent-teacher conferences.  Students also participated in a Day of Service on January 19th by making 100 lunches that were donated to the Morristown Mission. On the last day of January, we acknowledged our student volunteer efforts and our honor roll students with a bagel breakfast at our town meeting. For the second marking period, twelve students earned honor roll and four students received honorable mention.

Our third marking period elective offerings are Yoga, Art Workshop, Music Workshop, and American Sign Language. The American Sign Language elective is a four day a week class offered via Proximity Learning Virtual School. Students will participate in this class with a "live" online teacher two days a week. We will also have two teachers in the class at all times to assist the students with their online assignments and their participation in the live sessions. Sage Day Boonton is offering this course for the second semester as a pilot program in order to investigate the potential for online learning opportunities in the future.

Although early January was mild, the end of the month brought a series of storms, which resulted in the cancellation of our January bowling field trip, which was rescheduled for February 5th. We are excited to announce that if we have sufficient student interest, we will be offering an After School Boot Camp. This program will run from 2:30 to 5:00 once a week for eight weeks on Thursdays starting March 26 and ending May 28. This Boot Camp program will include warm up activities, plyometrics/strength/agility exercises, and a cool down. Healthy refreshments and nutritional guidelines will be provided. The cost for the program will be $250.00. Students will need to be picked up by their parent/guardian. If  students are interested, they can attend a free trial session on February 26th from 2:30-5:00.

We are in the heart of winter and it seems like the month of January flew by.

Report cards for Quarter 2 and Semester 1 were issued the end of January and parents have access to view their student's grades by logging into Powerschool using their access code and password.

On February 6th, Sage Day participated in National Go Red Day to raise money for the American Heart Association.

Two of our seniors are participating in Sage Day's College Experience Program that we offer through Bergen Community College. The College Experience will give these students the opportunity to take one college course at Bergen Community College during the afternoon.  This program allows our students the experience of going to college while still having the support of Sage Day.

On February 13th, our Advisory Groups participated in an activity around "speed dating." This was an organized social activity to encourage people to meet a number of people who they never met before. And to kick off our winter recess, we had our annual staff vs. student dodgeball tournament.

Mr. Montesano, our College & Career Transition Coordinator, is continuing to meet with our seniors as many of them are hearing back from colleges and will be helping them with the decision and financial aid process.  He will also be meeting with our Juniors to begin the transition process as they explore their options for a transition plan as they move into senior year.

February has been a busy month and the weather has been challenging with snow in the forecast every week.  We did manage to use a few snow days and opening delays.

In the midst of all the weather comes the talents of our students as they prepare for the annual Arts Festival which will be held in March. Students are busy with rehearsals and creating artwork for the displays.

The student council held a candy gram sale leading up to Valentine's Day and handed out candy to students before departing for break. The proceeds from the sale are used to subsidize trips and buses.

After two snow delays, picture day at the lower & middle school is scheduled for today.

Our popular Parent Support Group led by the therapists is scheduled for Wednesday evening, February 25th at 6:30 pm.

Also, anyone can now stay abreast of events at Sage Day Lower & Middle School by continually checking the recently-created student-run blog: http://sagedaynewsmahwah.blogspot.com/.
