Following the release of the Federal budget, OMSSA issued a Quick Connect providing information that the commitment to funding levels of $1.7b for social housing assumed the federal government would be maintaining its funding levels for the near future. As existing operating agreements came to an end, earlier estimates had projected a decreasing level of funding every year until 2039, when all funding to existing social housing units would end. The assumption that the $1.7b signaled a commitment by the federal government to maintain funding was based on consultation with a number of sector organizations.

OMSSA members may now know that subsequent communication with the sector from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) officials indicated that those projections had not changed, and that the status quo continues. Clarification was not provided as to the increase in the envelope to total the $1.7 billion promised in the budget.
