Curling at Centre Ice -
The Newest Sport at the Rink

Considering that it's been less than a year since curling came to Centre Ice Arena, it's quite amazing how much is going on! That says a lot about the sport of curling and the curling community. Here are a few things you should know about Curling at Centre Ice:
  • Almost ANYONE can curl! Sure, there's skill involved and you do work up a sweat, but people of all athletic abilities can participate. Comfortable soft-soled shoes are required and, for those who find bending and crouching difficult, there are poles that can be used to push the stone (think shuffleboard.) It's great fun!

  • Leagues have formed and take place every Tuesday and every other Saturday at Centre Ice. Stop by to watch the action. Click Here for the schedule.
  • There are Learn To Curl Classes every other Saturday at Centre Ice during league play. Click Here for the schedule.
  • A bonspiel is a Curling Tournament and the first one to ever be held at Centre Ice - dubbed Cherry Bombspiel -will be held April 24-26. To learn more, Click Here. Volunteers are needed. Curling experience not required.

Promotional Opportunities Available at Centre Ice and Howe Arena

When it comes to marketing your business, hundreds of options exist, but the promotional opportunities available at Centre Ice and Howe Arena are completely unique. Your brand receives excellent Exposure Value - proven by a recent Joyce Julius On-Site Inventory Analysis - while supporting non-profit community ice rinks which are part of the 501(c)(3) organization, I.C.E. (Involved Citizens Enterprises).

Without the support of advertisers, I.C.E. would not be able to fulfill its mission of "providing accessible and affordable ice skating programs to the Grand Traverse Region." While supporting the rinks is important to many businesses, so is the bottom line. Marketing dollars can be tight and must effectively promote the brand of the business. Nearly 400,000 people visit the rinks annually and the Joyce Julius Analysis proves that your message will be seen. It's a Win-Win...Brand awareness while supporting Your Community Ice Rinks!

For more information on all the opportunities that exist and to see the results of the Joyce Julius report, contact Tricia Frey, Marketing Director, at (231) 933-7465 x106 or email tricia.frey@centreice.org.

We hope you've enjoyed this issue of On Ice.
Please forward to anyone you know who likes to stay informed of the events and activities at Centre Ice and Howe Arena. Thank you!

Other GTHA Events:
Submitted by Ian Bryant

In late December, the GTHA Girls Hockey Program hosted a special hockey clinic and GIRLS ONLY SKATE with retired Detroit Red Wings player Dallas Drake, his daughter Delaney Drake - a forward at the North American Hockey Academy in Vermont and University of Wisconsin Women's Hockey Team commit - and other local women who have played hockey at elite levels.

The purpose of the event was to provide insight into the world of elite women hockey players from the area.  These athletes shared some of their experiences growing up playing hockey and demonstrated some of their favorite - as well as beneficial but not so favorite - on ice drills with the girls and coaches.

So...How Does It Feel To Be A U.S. Figure Skating Nationalist?

Local Traverse City Figure Skating Club member Frances Rossiter now knows what it feels like to compete at the highest level of her sport for her age bracket. Frances, along with her parents Jim and Linda Rossiter and her sisters Anna and Fiona, spent Jan. 15-25 in Greensboro, NC for the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships. Frances' division - Juvenile Girls - competed on Jan. 17, with the next levels - Intermediate, Novice, Junior, Senior, Ice Dance and Pairs - competing the following week. Frances, a local sixth grader, and her family stayed to watch the other competitions and participate in seminars throughout the week.
We asked Frances and her mom Linda about the experience and here's what they told On Ice:

OI: What was the most exciting part of the week?
Linda and FrancesJust being at nationals!
OI: What was your proudest moment?
LindaWhen the announcer said "Ladies and Gentleman, you are about to watch the top 12 juvenile skaters in the country!"
FrancesFinishing the season with a clean program at nationals, one of my best of the year.
OI: What is the most important thing you learned in Greensboro?
FrancesMy self-confidence - that I can do it.
OI: How does this affect you as an athlete?
Frances: It shows that hard work will pay off.
OI: Does having had this experience change how you view yourself as a skater and how you view your future as a skater?
Frances: Yes - I've set my goals even higher.
OI: What was it like watching the Senior Women's Finals when the likes of Ashley Wagner and Gracie Gold skated and what made the biggest impression on you while watching them?
Frances: It was impressive watching them in person rather than on TV. I know I can be there and it makes me work harder.

OI: From a parent's perspective, in what ways do you think the experience positively affected Frances? How will it mold and shape her?
LindaIt showed Frances what hard work and perseverance result in. She kept things in perspective - her goal was to go to nationals and skate a great performance regardless of her place. She accomplished this but also left with a desire to continue to work hard and get back and learn more for next year at the next level. She knows that, although this is a huge part of her life, that it does not define her as a person. It is only a part of who she is. This is so important because after a competition where you have one of those days, a bad skate, a skater can't let that particular skate define her as a skater. This sport (as many sports do) helps teach many valuable lessons: humility - you don't always have a good skate, some are great, some not so great. Falling in front of bleachers full of spectators does that! Also accountability - you can't blame it on anyone else - our culture so often doesn't teach this but rather accepts "I did it, but I don't want to take responsibility - it's someone else's fault."  Work ethic - you have to work hard to excel - things aren't going to be given to you. Perseverance can make you look forward, keep focused on the positive, and reach for the stars.  Anything is possible!

OI: What effect did it have on your other children?
Linda: Anna, Frances' younger sister who is also a skater, was very motivated to "get back and work harder so I can come here".
OI: Out of the 12 skaters in her division, where did Frances place?
Linda: She placed 11th out of 12 skaters.
OI: Was it a learning experience about what judges look for or expect?
Linda: Not really because there are critiques throughout the season with judges as to what they would like to see improved or changed.
