   "Portraits"
   By Minghuang Zhang

The artwork of
Ming Huang Zhang
through January 2015

Malden-based artist Ming Huang Zhang hails from China where he painted a 300 square meter mural at the Sri Lankan pavillion for the Shanghai World Expo in 2010.

East Meets West in oil painting

Zhang was trained by the protege of a master brush painter in China. After coming to America, Zhang decided to paint in a western style using Eastern elements. The influence of both styles of painting are evident in his artwork.

Portraits of diversity

Zhang was challenged and excited by the opportunity to paint people of all different backgrounds when he came to America. He loves to capture the various skin tones and facial features he sees every day in this country.

Sketch is the foundation of Zhang's artwork

Zhang sketches every day. Using charcoal as his medium, he visits public places like Harvard Square and Boston Common to find subjects for his sketch portraits. It usually takes him an average of 15 minutes to create a remarkable likeness in a detailed sketch.

Zhang's English is limited but his ability to communicate through artwork and enthusiasm is strong. In this video interview recorded during Window Arts Malden 2014, MATV staffer Hailey Hao interviews the artist in Mandarin, a common language for both. English translation is provided through summary subtitles and a full English translation by the interviewer following his responses.
