Observing Memorial Day
from

Mayor Rick Kriseman

This weekend, we remember the men and women who have died serving their country in the United States Armed Forces.

Although government offices are closed on Monday, May 26, to observe this special day, there are many activities over the long weekend for families.

You and your family might visit the Warhol exhibit at the Dali Museum, shop at the Saturday Morning Market or the new Deuces Live Sunday Market, take part in a docent tour of the Chihuly Collection, see the amazing Florida Orchestra at the Mahaffey Theater, cheer the Rays and Rowdies on to victory, visit a nearby award-winning beach, or just enjoy one of the many amenities that has made the Sunshine City one of the New York Times top 52 places to visit in the world.

As a way of showing appreciation, selected St. Petersburg museums and galleries offer the following discounts:

The Museum of Fine Arts offers free admission to members of the military, either active-duty, retired or veterans with a Department of Defense photo ID on Memorial Day. www.fine-arts.org

From May 24 to 26, military veterans receive free admission to The Chihuly Collection, 400 Beach Dr. NE, and Glass Blowing Demonstrations at the Glass Studio & Hot Shop, located north of the Morean Arts Center, 710 Central Ave. www.moreanartscenter.org

The Dali Museum offers a discounted admission of $19 to members of the military, public safety personnel (police and fire) and Educators with a photo ID every day the Museum is open. www.thedali.org

From Memorial Day, May 26 through Labor Day, September 1, the Florida Holocaust Museum offers free admission to service members, including National Guard and Reserve, and their families through Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Department of Defense and more than 2,000 museums across America. http://arts.gov/national/blue-star-museums#

While you and your family are out this weekend, take time to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and for our community.  Let their service and their sacrifice be an unwritten memorial, etched not in stone but in our hearts forever.
