Recleim Officially Opens SC Recycling Center
New Facility Expected to Bring 200 Recycling Jobs to SC
|
Recleim LLC, a next generation applicance recycler, has officially opened their recycling center in a reclaimed textile mill in Graniteville, SC. Recleim's $40.6 million investment has already created 70 jobs with 200 expected by the end of the year.
The facility will employ advanced recycling and air purification technologies. The Recleim recycling processes will ensure that end-of-life appliances are recycled in an environmentally safe manner, significantly reduce the landfill burden of these appliances, and maximize the value of the recycled components to end users.
The closed-loop resource recovery process is the first to be featured in North America and recovers 95% of the components in the appliances it processes. Agreements have been made with local companies including Pepsi Bottle Ventures, BSH Home Appliances Corporation and the South Carolina Association of Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors

Carton Council Receives Inaugural "Trashies" Award
|
The Carton Council of North America has been honored with the Trashies award from the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) and Smithers Pira under the Partnership category. The Trashies are new industry awards that are part of the annual SUSTPACK conference, and were created to recognize the story and people behind sustainable packaging.
Industry engagement and public/private collaboration is central to the Carton Council's strategy. The approach has included ensuring there are viable end markets and sorting facilities that accept cartons in place, and also educating consumers when cartons are accepted in their local recycling program. By working closely with material recovery facilities, paper mills, county and municipal governments as well as state recycling organizations and other industry organizations on these efforts, the Carton Council has been able to make tremendous progress since it first formed in 2009. Then, only 18 percent of U.S. households could recycle food and beverage cartons. Currently, more than 53 percent of U.S. households can now recycle cartons. This includes 62 million households in more than 10,000 communities across 48 states.
"The Carton Council embodies what we envisioned with the Trashies award," said Barbara Fowler, conference director, Smithers Pira. "The concept behind the Trashies is to delve into the story and people behind the package, demonstrating the efforts made to improve its sustainability. That is exactly what we have seen through the Carton Council."

Curbside Value Partnership Officially Changes Name to The Recycling Partnership
|
The Curbside Value Partnership (CVP), a national recycling non-profit formed in 2003, has officially changed its name to The Recycling Partnership. The change reflects their expanded role within the recycling industry and reduces confusion between the organization and the grant and technical assistance project that they manage, also known as The Recycling Partnership. As Executive Director Keefe Harrison says, "The Recycling Partnership launched in July 2014 to build a better America through targeted actions to improve recycling in communities. It became increasingly clear that the educational resources, tools and ideas that CVP develops and shares shouldn't be separated from the best practices being promoted and implemented by The Recycling Partnership."
