Dear Friend of Animals,
Perhaps you will be making some last-minute charitable donations for the 2014 tax year. Careful donors like you want to ensure that their contributions are being used effectively by conscientious organizations. How can you know for sure?
One way is to verify that an organization is registered as a 501(c)(3), compliant with
IRS reporting, committed to transparency, and has a published mission statement and impact summary. Use Guidestar to research a group's financials, 990 forms (required by the IRS), programs, and reviews. See Michigan Pet Fund Alliance's 5-star Silver Guidestar rating here. Do you prefer that 100% of your donation goes directly to save a shelter pet? If so, donate to MPFA's Judith Middleton Kroon Life-Saving Fund, which provides Michigan Certified Rescue organizations with grants for sick, injured, aged, or behaviorally-challenged pets who face limited adoption chances in a shelter. Are you considering donating to a Michigan animal shelter or humane society? Use the Shelter Save Rate Report, created by Michigan Pet Fund Alliance using Michigan Department of Agriculture's annual shelter reports, to view the performance of shelters. Or consider supporting those award-winning shelters who are absolutely doing the best job with donated funds.
Would you rather donate to a rescue group, many of which pull animals from shelters and keep them in foster care until permeant loving homes are found?
 Although the state of Michigan does not require rescue groups to be registered or licensed, MPFA has developed a voluntary certification program for rescue groups who commit to follow best practices, code of ethics, and collaborate with other rescues and shelters. Consider donating to one of the Michigan Certified Rescues here.
