Opening a retail store wasn't the original plan for 20-year-old Katie Harris, but after three years she has a second location.

Harris owns Urban Artsy, a men's and women's clothing boutique next to Helzberg Diamonds in University Mall in Carbondale.  The original store is in Mayfield, Kentucky.

Elastec workers in Carmi get to work building oil spill response equipment, in a multi-million dollar order for a private railway company.

"We are doing a large package for a major rail company," said sales manager Shon Mosier.    

 

He says a recent train derailment and oil spill in Northern Illinois highlights the need for more cleanup equipment. [more] 

A popular frozen yogurt shop is expanding to Williamson County.  

 

Cool Spoons Frozen Yogurt is opening a second location in Marion, at 1120 N. Carbon St., said Don Johnson, co-owner of the shop.

 

He said he hopes to be able to open the frozen yogurt shop by the end of March.

 

"From day one, we always thought we would go into other markets," Johnson said. "It was just a matter of time and resources to make that happen." [more]  

Greplytix, Inc. has released an Open Source project as part of a Computer Science Senior Project for SIUC student Jon Picchietti. This project improves the development environment for engineers or developers utilizing both Haml and Handlebars in the Sublime Text 2/3 Editor for web-based tempting.

 

SIUC Computer Science alumnus and Greplytix's CEO Joe Viscomi said, "It's important to provide high quality and real world projects for students to gain experience before they graduate. This is not only a resume builder, but it boosts the confidence in the students' problem solving abilities as well." [more]  
SBDC STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Ted J. Gutierrez, the most recent addition to the staff at the SIU SBDC, recently completed "Mastering QuickBooks Online" training in preparation for counseling clients on the utilization of the accounting popular software.  

 

Ted joined the SBDC staff in May 2014 and has established himself as a trusted resource for small businesses in the Southern Illinois region.  He earned his MBA from the University of Redlands and his undergraduate degree from the University of New Mexico.   

 

Prior to working with the SBDC, he honed his skills with more 15 years of successful business results including most recently with a local financial institution.  Currently, Ted serves as a Board Member for the Marion Chamber of Commerce, is active with the Marion Lions Club, and attends several events for the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce.   

 

His wife Jennifer; son Reese, who is a Junior at Carbondale Community High School; and their two dogs, Maple and Cali, reside in Carbondale.
