|
THIS SUMMER, Yakutia Airlines will be operating flights on the routing Anchorage - Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky - Yakutsk on Saturdays, July 11 - August 29 (the layover in Kamchatka is just a few hours in each direction). This makes travel to and from Yakutsk convenient and comfortable.
YAKUTSK is one of the most distant of Russia's cities, a strategic outpost in a region of permafrost, renowned for its temperature extremes. The city has much to offer visitors. We've assembled a list of our
6 favorite places to visit while there.
Lena Pillars Nature Park: A day-cruise up the Lena River from Yakutsk to see the breathtaking Lena Pillars, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These picturesque cliffs reach up to 900 feet high and extend for miles along the river.
Mammoth Museum: The Mammoth Museum is a unique place, hosting the rarest findings of the ancient animals' remains discovered over the last decades, including ancient mammoth, ancient bison, ancient woolly rhino, ancient horse and dog.

Kingdom of Permafrost: The 150 meter deep (apprx. 492 feet) complex of tunnels in the permafrost are decorated with ice sculptures, an office complete with the computer and telephone, a children's slide and many more - all made from blocks of ice. There is even a bar where tourists are served vodka in ice glasses.
Treasury of The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Exhibition: Yakutia produces 95% of Russia's diamonds and 15% of its gold output. Visitors will see a unique collection of gold, platinum, silver, and large natural diamonds. The collection also includes the works of local craftsmen: jewelers, diamond cutters, stone and bone carvers.
Archaeology & Ethnography Museum: The museum has one of the Far East's best displays on indigenous peoples and shows the history of the peoples of Yakutsk, objects of everyday life and the mythology of the Sakha, Eveny, Evenki, Yukagiry, and other Yakut ethnic groups since ancient times.
Khomus Museum (International Center for Jew's Harp Music): Khomus plays an important part in Sakha culture and concerts take place year-round, when performers imitate natural sounds such as a horse neighing. The museum has the biggest jaw's harp collection in the world.

CANADIANS' INCREDIBLE ADVENTURES IN RUSSIA
|
Canadians Laverna and Chris. Photo: Natalya Panina
Chris and Laverna are an adventurous couple from Canada, who are not afraid of challenges. She's 50 and he's 54. They have visited several dozens of countries so far, on walking tours, ascents, rafting, with hundreds of new people met and cultures learned. In 2013, the adventurers came to Russia.
"It was long ago when I heard about your peninsula for the first time. In 2004, I lived in Montreal and once I watched a TV program about the Kluchevskaya Volcanic Group. I was so much impressed by a bird's eye view of the local scenery that I decided to go here by all means," Christian says with enthusiasm. "Then, we read a lot about Kamchatka in the Internet: about the Germans who biked across your forests, about a Canadian who lived in the Reserve for several years and grew up bear cubs... We were inspired by other people and made up our minds to go here."

HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA (2010)

Happy People: A Year in the Taiga Official Trailer |
HAPPY PEOPLE: A YEAR IN THE TAIGA takes viewers on an unforgettable journey into remote and extreme natural landscapes. The acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog presents this visually stunning documentary about indigenous people living in the heart of the Siberian Taiga.
Deep in the wilderness, far away from civilization, 300 people inhabit the small village of Bakhtia at the river Yenisei. There are only two ways to reach this outpost: by helicopter or boat. There's no telephone, running water or medical aid. The locals, whose daily routines have barely changed over the last centuries, live according to their own values and cultural traditions. With insightful commentary written and narrated by Herzog, the documentary follows one of the Siberian trappers through all four seasons of the year to tell the story of a culture virtually untouched by modernity. Werner Herzog's distinguished filmography includes documentaries such as Grizzly Man, Encounters at the End of the World, and Cave of Forgotten Dreams. For more information, click here.
