Summer is in full swing and July is Parks and Recreation Month. Give yourself a boost by heading out to a local or national park. We are lucky to be in Cleveland which is surrounded by the "Emerald Necklace" our Metroparks system. There are plenty of programs offered from kayaking to horseback riding to stand-up paddleboarding. Workstation Workout
Thursdays, July 9-30, 1 PM Thwing, Bellflower Lounge

B ecause the first Workstation Workout class filled in less than an hour, we have added a second opportunity! In this four-week, 45-minute strength training program, you will learn simple exercises to do almost anywhere. Using just your own body weight and a resistance band (provided by CWRU Wellness) you will learn workouts you can recreate at your own desk during the week.
(Please note that there is no elevator access to the room.)

Making Healthy Choices - with Consumers Report
Video Option

To help you and your family have informed conversations with your doctor and other health care providers about choosing what health care you need - and which medical tests and treatments you may not need - we are excited to offer you the Making Healthy Choices videos.

  

These short and compelling videos, created by Consumer Reports, help you think about what questions to ask your doctor, such as, "Do I really need this medical test or treatment? What are the risks and benefits? And, what happens if I don't do anything?"

 

App Option

 

The Making Healthy Choices iPhone app, created by Consumer Reports, includes easy-to-read information about over 100 health topics and will help you answer questions such as, "Do I really need this medical test or treatment? What are the risks and benefits? And, what happens if I don't do anything?"

 

Website Option

 

The Making Healthy Choices toolset, created by Consumer Reports, include easy-to-read brochures about over 100 health topics, short and compelling videos to help you think about what questions to ask your doctor, and the iPhone app.

 

This easy-to-read information helps you become an active participant in your health care, reduce costs, and improve outcomes.

 

CWRU is participating in a pilot launch of these resources from Consumer Reports. Please use this information in the next month. In early August, we will send out a survey to obtain feedback on how you have used the information. Raffle prizes for survey respondents will be available.  

Health Tip - The Importance of Sleep
Lack of sleep has been linked to many chronic diseases and conditions. Sleep deprivation is associated with cognitive dysfunction that impairs productivity and energy levels, and decreases ability to cope with stress. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night for maximum function during the day. Faculty, staff and students are able to participate in a free 8 week long Tobacco Cessation program offered by ease@work, our EAP vendor. The next session begins this week. Please email Valerie Clause, program facilitator, at [email protected] if you are interested in participating.

 

QuitLine Individual Coaching

 

The University also has an individual telephone coaching program available (free) for benefits-eligible faculty and staff. Free nicotine replacement therapy is included. The QuitLine program can be reached by calling 1-800-QUITNOW.

Wellness Participant Survey
704 (35%) of current participants in the wellness program completed our recent survey.

The majority rated the program as "very good" or "excellent" and are "likely" or "very likely" to recommend the program to a friend.
  
The favorite component of the programs are the incentives.
  
Most were interested in having more physical activity, stress management and group programs offered on campus.
  
The vast majority indicated that they will continue participating in the program.
  
Many different suggestions were shared: offering sit/stand workstations, helping managers and supervisors support well-being in their work groups, making the campus tobacco free, offering new methods for people to easily track their wellness efforts, and helping people get recognized for all of their hard work.
  
Additional suggestions included: offering more, and varied, programs; offering shorter classes and in different locations across campus; increasing communication on program features.
  
Thanks to all who provided their perspectives.  We will use this data to guide our program development efforts going forward!
Ease@Work
The EASE program is a  private and confidential service that provides counseling and community resources for benefits-eligible employees and family members.

EASE uses the services of over 40 licensed, credentialed counseling professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and other trained counselors in over 30 Northeast Ohio locations. In addition EASE has a national counseling network with several hundred providers for those working outside of Ohio.

 

To use the EASE Program, simply call 216-241-3273 or 1-800-521-3273. Staff are available and calls are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
