Volunteers Shine Despite Trying Winter

Snow mounds piled high, but our volunteers arrived at our kitchen every day to prep, package and deliver medically-appropriate meals to the homes of 1,525 critically-ill individuals throughout Massachusetts.

"I have volunteered for 10 years, and this last Saturday's delivery was the most difficult ever. The streets were so narrow, and I couldn't find a place to pull over or park," said Debbi Hildebrandt, who delivered meals shortly after one of Boston's largest snowfalls.

To make the delivery, Debbie parked her car on the main road and walked to the homes of our clients.

"It helped me remember why we do this. If it is this difficult for me, healthy and with a car, what is it like for our clients to try and get to the market and prepare food?  We "do good" at Community Servings and it took a nasty day like last Saturday to remind me of that," she said.

Grant Highlights

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

awarded Community Servings a three-year $900,000 capacity building grant. This grant will serve to deepen the agency's Food as Medicine work, integrate new technology and software systems, and strengthen the agency's visibility.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation

named Community Servings as a recipient of its 2014 Neighborhood Builders award. Neighborhood Builders is a strategic investment in high-performing nonprofits that combines $200,000 in unrestricted funding with leadership training for executives. The award, which includes the purchase of a new van, will help Community Servings expand services to Fitchburg and Leominster, allowing us to bring our innovative approach to hunger to more people in need.

You have the power to help us serve more of our sick and hungry neighbors.
