Show Yourself Some Love This Month!

Make February the month to show yourself a little extra love by taking care of your own heart. Heart disease is the number one cause of death for Women and Men. Remember that
Preventive Care is much cheaper and easier than
Sick Care. Take time this month to evaluate your habits and lifestyle. See if there are some healthy changes you can make that may one day save your life. Minor changes can make significant differences.

Volunteers needed for upcoming events! Look in the Service Opportunity section for more information.

Mallory Wallin

Mallory Wallin is a senior at UVU, studying behavioral science with an emphasis in psychology. She is the vice president of Academic Senate for UVUSA and is working on many projects within the realm of student advocacy including the new feedback system and Student Voice

She has been extensively involved throughout the UVU community including, the Women's Success Center, working as a resident advisor at Wolverine Crossing and two years being a part of the Center for the Advancement of Leadership, where she learned to not limit herself by expectations and the importance of service to others and the community.

Newsroom
Women in Leadership

New insights on what women bring to leadership is the topic of extensive discussion and research. Studies show the organizations that contain diversity have happier employees and stay longer with the organization. Women are powerful mentors that care about developing others around them. Women also contribute to better team performance and productivity.

Dr. Susan Madsen reports in the Utah Women & Leadership Project's Research & Policy Brief #5, that there are many benefits to organizations when women and men equally are in leadership roles. Both demonstrate different characteristics that build upon each other, helping the organization to be more effective. Recent studies show that on average, the organizations that have more women in upper management and leadership roles are more profitable than other organizations. Dr. Madsen concludes, "Bringing together the strengths of both men and women can result in more effective, productive, and innovative teams and organizations."

Highlights from Utah Women's Walk
Utah Women's Walk

The Women's Success Center is happy to partner with the Utah Women's Walk in bringing to light the remarkable contributions of Utah women since 1847. Utah Women's Walk is an oral history project directed by Michele Welch where students from the UVU American Studies and Folklore programs interview notable women from their own fields of study. After the interviews are recorded and transcribed, the students write short biography of the nominee as well as a reflection of their experience. The recordings and transcriptions of the interviews can be accessed through the UVU library or at www.utahwomenswalk.com.

Our plan is to include "Highlights from the Utah Women's Walk" in each issue of the WSC newsletter. We will feature portions of their inspiring stories, (including challenges and advice) with a promise to enlighten, entertain, and motivate readers.

Click Here to view a short overview of the Utah Women's Walk project at the 2014 closing session of the UWHEN Conference hosted at Utah Valley University. You will also hear advice for Utah women in higher education given by Cecelia Foxley, Kathie Debenham, Deborah Bayle, Shirlee Silversmith, Peggy Pasin and Carmen Negron.
