The most important news of the last month was the passing of our longtime president Alan Brockman on December 22, 2014.  Alan called me the day before he fell to discuss matters in the Pines.  He was fully informed on all matters that FIPPOA is currently pursuing and, of course, had a few opinions and barbs to pass along.  He was enormously complimentary and his final words will always remain with me.  The Brockman Notice that we previously published follows my letter.   Hugh O'Brien who is a Fire Island Association Vice President and member of the Saltaire Volunteer Fire Department wrote a complimentary note that helps capture many of Alan's best qualities.

Alan has made a significant bequest to the FIPPOA Charitable Foundation for which we are very grateful.  His estate requested that donations in remembrance of Alan be made to the FIPPOA Charitable Foundation.  I have already asked the FIPPOA Board to make donations and I am similarly asking the same of the community.  I want to show that the community cares.

Elsewhere, the FIMI project is moving along.  There is substantial work underway at Smith Point County Park and construction will begin shortly at the lighthouse.  The county will shortly begin the process of obtaining easements from our ocean front homeowners to permit construction in the Pines.  We have a commitment from Suffolk county to meet with our ocean front homeowners, though we are waiting for a date to be set for the meeting.  The goal remains to complete the "real estate" process by August which would allow construction to begin next winter. If the "real estate" process slows, then the construction for the Pines will have to be pushed back.

I am delighted with the news of the sale of the commercial properties in the Pines and congratulate Ian Reisner and P.J. McAteer for pulling off the purchase.  The new owners led by Ian and PJ are long time Pines residents and either Pines or NYC businessmen.  This bodes well for the success of the new venture.

Ian and P.J. will be leading the management of the new venture.  Both have long and successful records of hospitality management, P.J. as owner and manager of the Sip n' Twirl and related businesses and Ian as the hotelier behind The Out Hotel in the city.  Ian deserves much credit here because he worked tirelessly the last few weeks putting together the group of investors to make the purchase.  I am optimistic that with their blend of skills The Pines is on the road to a more vibrant commercial life.  This is a Win Win for the Pines!

As suggested by some of you, we have revamped the newsletter to be more smartphone and tablet friendly.  I hope we have succeeded.

Cordially,

Jay

Weather, Trap Bags & Membership

"These strong winds blowing off the ocean can cause coastal flooding and beach erosion from New Jersey northward with the worst flooding occurring from late on Monday night into Tuesday evening. Luckily for area residents, Monday marks the first quarter of the solar cycle (half the moon is visible). This means that the difference between high and low tide will be minimal," stated AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Evan Duffey, today.

As I hunker down and prepare for Juno, the storm of "historic proportions" that is about to sock the east coast, I can't help but think of its likely impact on the Pines. All indicators are that Fire Island will be whacked hard again by this winter's second nor'easter. I am sure you are thinking the same.  Renewing your FIPPOA Membership may not be top of mind, but in fact, now more than ever we need your renewal and continued critical donations to the Seashore Defense Fund (SDF) Like us on Facebook.  We are pleased to announce that we have begun the process of replacing and repairing the Trap Bags from December's nor'easter.  This is a great example of how your Membership dollars and SDF donations are put to good use all year long.  Thank you to those who have already renewed your FIPPOA membership.  We are off to a good start.  For those of you who haven't rejoined yet, please, take the time to renew now as you wait out the storm. The health of the Pines depends upon your continued support!

Thanks,

Russell Saray, Membership & SDF Chair

Alan Brockman

1931 - 2014

Alan Brockman, our longtime former president, passed away on December 29th.  Under Brockman's leadership, FIPPOA experienced a sustained period of growth and evolution and Fire Island Pines was largely defined as the community we know today.

After graduating cum laude from Amherst College, Brockman studied law at Columbia Law School.  During a distinguished law career in which he became a Partner and Senior Counsel with the law firm of Tenzer Greenblatt, he represented a number of celebrity clients and many residents and homeowners of the Pines.  He specialized in corporate, real estate, and trusts and estate matters.

Alan was first elected to the FIPPOA Board in 1976 and served a total of  36 years.  In 1978 he was elected Treasurer, serving for four years.  He was elected President in 1982, a position he held until 2006.  Subsequently he was named Director Emeritus.  In addition to FIPPOA, Brockman served as a long-time Trustee of Congregation B'Nai Olam  in the Pines.

During Brockman's presidency, FIPPOA evolved from a homeowners association with a limited scope of managing a marina to an organization working closely with the Town of Brookhaven to manage a wide range of governmental affairs in the community.  He also developed an extensive relationship with state and federal officials to support FIPPOA's work. Alan was responsible for helping draft and ratify the first set of zoning regulations that would govern building and development for several decades.  Association assets were enhanced during his tenure, with the rebuilding of the harbor and marina property and the reconstruction of the community center that was completed as Whyte Hall in 2006. He oversaw two beach replenishment projects and led the creation of the FIPPOA Charitable Foundation.

Brockman was preceded in death by Bill Peterson, his partner of 37 years, in 2002.  They came to the Pines in 1971 and lived in their home on Midway Walk where they enjoyed graciously entertaining guests through the years.

The Pines was the most important aspect of Alan's life.  We worked continually to ensure its growth as the unique community that it is today.  He fought hard for the Pines, sometimes with harsh words, and yet at his core he was a generous, loving and caring man.  Alan will always be remembered for his devotion to the Pines and his dedication to FIPPOA.  He will live on in his many accomplishments for the Pines.  There will be a celebration of Alan's  life on May 9, 2015 at 2PM at Whyte Hall in the Pines.

Francisco Silva

A Pines resident and contractor, Francisco Silva was always the person with the biggest smile in the harbor. He met every boat just in case one of his clients needed him when they got off the ferry.   Aside from always being available, Francisco was a true friend to his clients as well.   No job was too small, or too large.   Francisco lived in the Pines from March thru November for the past twenty five years.   He would return to his beloved Brazil from December thru February and it was there that he succumbed to a heart attack that took him away from us years before his time.   He will always be remembered for his kindness, his skills and his lovable accent that had his interpretations and meaning.   A really good guy all around, and a caring resident.
