HONOLULU RAIL'S ENVIRONMENTAL ADVANTAGES

As people around the world prepare to celebrate Earth Day next week, the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) renews its commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

Rail transit will provide an alternative to driving and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.  Honolulu's electric-powered rail technology will produce about 75 percent less in greenhouse gas emissions per passenger mile than private automobiles.

In addition to providing a clean energy alternative to driving, the Honolulu rail system will preserve green space by concentrating development near its rail stations.

The Rail Operations Center, currently under construction in Waipahu near Leeward Community College, is being built with sustainability in mind.  HART is pursuing a certification goal of LEED Certified Silver for the Rail Operations Center.  In order to achieve certification, the center will incorporate water efficient landscaping and fixtures, construction waste diversion, superior indoor air quality and many other green building features.
