Good Causes

Fellowship Fund

...is a fund at the church which has helped people in our congregation when they've faced utilities shut-offs, overwhelming medical bills, extended unemployment, and other unexpected financial crises.  Every now and then, we collect offerings to replenish this fund.  THIS SUNDAY will be the last Sunday we take up this special  offering.  Thanks so much for your thoughtful giving.

A Pressing Need for
Lunches on the Square

Every 4th Sunday we gather in the chapel to make sandwiches and bag lunches. The bagged lunches are delivered to 250 people residing in subsidized apartments in Newark.

The other part of the Lunches on the Square program is serving a meal in partnership with Trinity Episcopal church in Newark.

Over the past few months the number of people coming for the Sunday meal has continued to increase. We served a record number of meals on Sunday, August 24th. One hundred people came to eat. The fellowship hall at Trinity was full of families with young children, senior citizens, people who talked about being homeless, and individuals who were just hungry. We began serving food at 2:00. By 2:30 most of the food was gone.

Lunches on the Square is entirely supported by donations from both members of the United Church of Granville and friends of the program.

The increased need has resulted in an increase in the amount of funds needed to support this program. The Mission and Social action Committee is seeking additional donations. Donations can be made directly to United Church of Granville (write LOS on the memo line) or online through the church website (navigate to "Stewardship and Giving").

The UN's "World Food Day" was on Oct. 16th, and National Food Day is this Friday! The shared purpose of these two events is to remind folks that many people around the world-- even right here in the US--are food insecure, or lack easy access to nutritious meals.

This weekend, we'll join churches around the country in celebrating The Churches Week of Action on Food with a special communion service in which we'll be able to move around our sanctuary as we participate in "Feeding our Families," "Feeding our Community,", "Feeding the World," and "Feeding our Future."

And it's fitting that we'll be joining together after worship to make lunches for distribution in Newark through our Lunches on the Square program.

Hope to see you all this Sunday!

Peace,
Dwight

It's getting to be that time of the year again when the heaters are coming on.  If you happen to be the last one out of a room here in one of the buildings, check to see that the heaters are turned down or off, and as always, that the lights are switched off.  Thanks!

Thought for the Day

"If you don't die of thirst, there are blessings in the desert. You can be pulled into limitlessness, which we all yearn for, or you can do the beauty of minutiae, the scrimshaw of tiny and precise. The sky is your ocean, and the crystal silence will uplift you like great gospel music, or Neil Young."

- Anne Lamott
