  • Eco-friendly water bottle filling stations and single-stream recycling containers just in time for Earth Day
  • Brighter paint, new ceiling tiles and energy-efficient lighting
  • Bike assembly rack
  • New charging stations and outlets for electronics.

Future plans call for new carpet and a redesign of the baggage claim area, an overhaul of the food court and streamlining the international arrivals process.

All of these projects not only help improve the airport experience for customers, but ensure that an attractive, modern facility is ready for future airline partners and tenants.

Thank you for reading and for flying, and we hope you enjoy the new surroundings.

Taking Flight: The Sky Beneath Our Feet
New Airside Terminal Terrazzo Floor Starting to Shine

Local painter and Carnegie Mellon University art professor Clayton Merrell (pictured far left), who designed the new terrazzo floor, recently join in the installation process in the food court area. Merrell's design, The Sky Beneath Our Feet, features five iconic views of Pittsburgh and landmarks including Heinz Field, PNC Park, Smithfield Street Bridge and the historic Carrie Furnace. Merrell helped assemble pieces of the silhouettes and poured terrazzo into metal forms. He said it's amazing to see the design coming together. "I couldn't be happier with the quality of the workmanship, and the design is translating to the large scale of the floor even better than I had dared to hope." The entire project encompasses 69,000 sq. ft. and is the first major renovation of the Airside Terminal since the airport opened in 1992. The project is scheduled to be completed in October.

American Airlines, TAM Expand Codeshare for Brazil Flights
Agreement Extends to Flights from Pittsburgh

American Airlines and TAM, Brazil's largest airline headquartered in Sao Paulo, are expanding their codeshare to include flights to Pittsburgh. A codeshare is an agreement between airlines to sell tickets on the same flight and list the flight under the same number, making for easier connections. American Airlines will place TAM's code on its flights to Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh from Boston, Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia and Phoenix. Bryan Dietz, Vice President, Air Service Development, said more than 7,000 people per year travel to Brazil from Pittsburgh, and the market is growing. "This is a great way to provide improved access to Brazil through multiple hubs from Pittsburgh," he said. Both carriers are members of the oneworld alliance and already codeshare on a number of other routes. TAM provides service to destinations within Brazil, as well as international flights to Europe and other parts of North and South America.

American Airlines/US Airways Moving Toward Integrated "American"

American Airlines has also received a single operating certificate from the FAA for American and US Airways , marking a major milestone in the integration of the two airlines which recently merged. Flight operations, maintenance and dispatch procedures will now be identical for all flights. Air traffic control communications will refer to all American and US Airways flights with the call sign "American." Customers will continue to check in for their flights on aa.com, usairways.com, or at American or US Airways ticket counters until later this year when American moves to a single reservations system. Since American and US Airways merged in December 2013 , the airline has been making steady integration progress, including inducting US Airways into the oneworld alliance, merging separate frequent flyer programs into the single AAdvantage program and reaching five-year joint collective bargaining agreements with its pilots and flight attendants.

Passenger Traffic Continues to Increase

Low Cost Carriers, Leisure Destinations Thriving

Two months into 2015, overall traffic numbers continue to rise at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Combined enplaned and deplaned traffic for February 2015 totaled 535,439 passengers. February 2015 shows a 3.5% increase over February 2014, and year to date, total passenger traffic is up 2.4%. Reasons for the continuing increase in traffic include new nonstop service on Allegiant to three leisure markets in Florida - Jacksonville, Tampa/St. Pete, Ft. Myers/Punta Gorda - as well as service on Vacation Express to Cancun, Mexico. JetBlue Airways also contributed to the overall airport growth experiencing a 97 percent increase in year-over-year traffic at the airport with continued success to Boston and with new service to Fort Lauderdale. Pittsburgh International currently provides nonstop service to 45 nonstop destinations, 166 weekday nonstop departures and more than 14,000 weekday nonstop seats on eight carriers.
