Emily Marlow is no stranger to True Friends camps. She has been to 11 previous camp sessions at different camp locations! She first came to camp at the recommendation of her speech coach, who was instructing at Camp Courage's speech camp.

"My favorite part of camp every year is arts and crafts," said Emily. Emily also enjoys horseback riding, playing with bunnies and cooking while at camp.

She loves seeing returning staff members. "I like getting to sing with George," said Emily. Her favorite class is music with George, who is a returning staff member known for his amazing music lessons and inviting personality. George makes music fun for all of the campers with his songs.

Emily works at Opportunity Partners and loves her job. She likes that she has a variety of projects to do. Her dream job is a professional poster decorator. "I would take the posters made from people's dreams and color them. I would donate them to children's hospitals and orphanages to decorate," Emily said.

VolunteersVolunteer

Evan is a teenager who made a big commitment to do volunteer work and had big results. After hearing about True Friends from a family member, Evan became very interested in volunteering for a week. He scheduled himself to volunteer the day after school let out, kicking off his summer at camp. He took a six-hour train ride alone from Wisconsin to the Twin Cities, where a family friend picked him up and drove him to Camp Friendship. "Evan really grew and developed during the week he spent at camp. I think many people come in expecting to make a difference in other people's lives, but you could really see how camp changed his life," said Sarah LaValla, co-leader of the Leader In Training program. Evan also felt the impact of camp, saying, "Being at camp made me open my eyes to a whole new world. The other volunteers and counselors were some of the best people I have ever met and I feel blessed I had this experience."

The Taste of Courage and Friendship wine-tasting event took place at Cobb Creek Vineyard in Wells, Minn. It featured samplings from Indian Island Winery and a beer tasting from Bent Brewery located in Roseville. Door prizes, a silent auction, hors d'oeuvres and live music spurred a great turn out of about 80 people. The group, Tee It Up For Campers, hosted this event and will be hosting their annual golf tournament in July at Oakview Golf Course in Alden, Minn. Proceeds from these events fund scholarships for area campers.

True Friends Can ...TFC
...make our camps look great!

Twelve volunteers from Hanover Insurance Group spent their time and money planting flowers at Camp Eden Wood to prepare the site for summer campers and guests. They spent a precious Saturday working hard and the results are amazing!

Thank you, Hanover volunteers!
