Protein - Do we get it right?
Aim for 30 grams of protein at each meal
Protein has been receiving a lot of attention lately. Research shows protein promotes optimal health and a healthy weight by maintaining lean muscle and promoting satiety . A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition found healthy adults increase muscle synthesis rate by 25% when eating a moderate amount of protein at each meal. Are we consuming protein in the right way? Many Americans eat more than 60% of their daily protein in one single large dinner meal. Science discovers that including 30 grams of protein at each meal throughout the day optimizes health benefits. Here are a few tips to make small changes to the diet.
Easy 30 gram protein-rich breakfast ideas:
  • 2 eggs with peanut butter on a slice of whole grain toast, and a glass of 1% milk
  • Scrambled eggs with lean ground beef wrapped in a whole grain tortilla in this satisfying beef breakfast burrito

LIghten up your lunch & sneak a snack:

  • Create a salad of greens, carrots, brown rice, garbanzo beans and top with hard-boiled eggs or 2 oz chicken.
  • Blend a fruit smoothie with lowfat yogurt and your favorite fruit.
Back to School Tips

Its back to school! A bit of planning goes a long way in ensuring that our kids eat healthy and our morning goes smoothly.
  • Stock up with essentials for lunch or snacks such as low-sugar breakfast cereals, granola bars, dried fruit, eggs and yogurt. Try this easy and delicious Mediterranean wrap.

  • Sport practice at 4? Pack extra snacks to fuel the workout. Good options are PBJ, home-made trail-mix, fruits, fig bars or pretzels.

  • Don't forget kids need a minimum of 8 hours of sleep to stay healthy and be ready to learn!

Latest - BOLD+ diet lowers blood pressure

Latest research published in the Journal of Human Hypertension adds to growing evidence that nutrient-rich lean beef in a heart-healthy diet improves cardiovascular health. The study found that the Beef in a Optimal Lean Diet (BOLD+) with 5.4 oz of lean beef daily, significantly reduced systolic blood pressure, compared to the control diet in the study. The BOLD diet, a DASH-like diet but with lean beef as the main protein, has also been shown to lower LDL-cholesterol by 10%.
