A Thank You to UUMC...

Dear University UMC,

I have so much to be thankful for on this day.  Your love and support strengthened me as I served at The Wesley and as I went to Ingleside.  I'm now settling in at First United Methodist Church in Lafayette and I only feel confident stepping into the ministry here because of all that I learned from my four years with you.  I'm so grateful for the things I learned, the people I got to know and the opportunities I was offered to serve at University UMC.  You have all taught me so much about faithful pastoral leadership and what it means to follow Christ in this new day.  You have encouraged me, challenged me and supported me in ways I could not have imagined.  I am in awe of your love offering and will remember you often as God continues to do great work in and through us.  Until our paths cross again, may God surround you with grace and peace.

Humble and Thankful.
-Rev. Drew Sutton

A New School Year is About to Start!
The new school year is right around the corner, and besides marking the official end of summer, it also brings exciting changes here at UUMC as children and youth will move to the next age/grade level. Sunday, August 16th is Promotion Sunday. K - 5 will meet upstairs in the Children's Building in Room 206 where they will celebrate the new school year with great snacks and fun games.. The new 6th graders will start Confirmation on this day as well and our other youth will continue to meet upstairs in the Youth Area.

Where will my child/youth go to Sunday School on August 16th?
  • Our Pre-K meet in room 104 on the first floor of the Children's Building. This group is for children age 2 - 5.
  • Kindergarten through 5th grade meet for rotation based Sunday School on the second floor of the Children's Building. They gather for snack at 9:45 AM in room 206.
  • 6th Graders attending our Confirmation Class will meet in the room at the top of the stairs in our Youth Area.
  • 7th - 12th Grade Youth will meet upstairs in our Youth Area.
Additionally, the ministers and children's director at University United Methodist Church want to present all 3rd graders with a Bible during worship on August 16th.  If your child is going into 3rd grade, please contact the church office to let us know.  We would also like to invite your 3rd grader to a six week Sunday school class where your child will join with peers to learn how to use their Bible and familiarize themselves with it. This class, led by Shirley Flake, will begin on Sunday, August 23 during the Sunday school hour at 9:45-10:45 AM on the second floor of the children's building in room 201.

If you have any questions regarding our kids program (Pre-K- 5th grade) or 3rd grade bibles, please contact our Children's Director, Kellie Schumacher - [email protected]

For more information about Confirmation or Youth, please contact our Youth Director, Stew Craig - [email protected]

In anticipation of the school year beginning, we want to help our students start out right.  With that in mind, we invite all our children, youth and parents to worship on Sunday, August 16th for a blessing of their backpacks.  Time will be taken in worship to pray for the children and youth and for their upcoming studies and to bless their backpacks that they bring to worship.  Please join us!
You are invited...

We invite any 6th grader, or older youth who hasn't gone through confirmation, to join the confirmation class for this year. Confirmation will begin on August 16 for Promotion Sunday.
Our Confirmation class will meet during the Sunday school hour-from 9:45-10:45 AM -in the youth area in the room at the top of the stairs. Stew Craig, our youth director, will be teaching the class with the assistance of Rev(s). Riecke, Bookter, and Civils.

Parents of the confirmands are invited to join their child for the first Confirmation gathering on Sunday, August 16 during the Sunday School hour. This will be an introduction to Confirmation as well as an overview of the what the confirmation class will be doing for the next few months.

What is confirmation?
  • Confirmation is the continuation of one's faith journey (a journey begun at baptism) and the beginning of one's covenant relationship with the church - not an end unto itself.
  • Confirmands should emerge from their confirmation experience prepared for a life of Christian discipleship.
The goals of Confirmation include:
  • Prepares confirmands (if they choose) to take the confirmation vows and to live lives of Christian discipleship.
  • Teaches confirmands the story of their faith, as contained in the Old and New Testaments and in the history and traditions of Christianity and the United Methodist Church.
  • Explores basic understandings of Christian theology-including the doctrine of the Trinity, creation, sin, grace, redemption, etc.
  • Develops a habit of participating in Christian education.
Our 6th graders are being promoted to the youth group, as well as starting Confirmation. They will still participate in Asbury & Wesley Choir to provide strong voices and leadership, but we also hope that they will join us for youth group every Sunday night from 5:30-7PM. We hope that our 6th graders and their parents will consider making a faithful commitment to be at Confirmation Class each week. We look forward to seeing you there!

If you have any questions about Confirmation, please contact our youth director, Stew Craig by email ([email protected]) or by calling the church office.

Youth Dinner Volunteers Needed!
We need your help! As we plan for Youth Dinners for the fall semester, consider providing dinner for the youth on Sunday evenings.  This is an easy way to serve the youth of our congregation. Dinner just needs to be dropped off by 5:15 PM. A sign-up sheet will be in Fellowship Hall this Sunday during Fellowship Time or email Stew Craig at [email protected].
Board of Trustees Information

The Board of Trustees will begin publishing the agendas for their meetings as well as the minutes of all past meeting of the year.  This information can be found at the UUMC website under the drop down menu of "Media & Resources". A direct link to the page is:

This site will also publish the names of your Trustees as well as their email and a description of our duties.

It is the goal of the Board of Trustees to keep the congregation completely informed as to the workings and decisions of your board.

Also, by way of this site, there is a standing invitation for any member of the congregation to attend the meetings of the Board of Trustees to discuss items of interest on the agenda or contact a member of the Board at any time to voice any concerns or opinions as to the work we perform for the church
Capitol and Maintenance Projects Subcommittee

The Board of Trustees is presently compiling a list of all capital and maintenance projects needed for the church facilities.  This listing will also strive to prioritize those items based on need and financial considerations.

The Subcommittee handling this endeavor is comprised of Robert Blackledge, Janis Kile Roux and Mary Michael Staples.  If there is anyone who has concerns about maintenance or property issues, they should contact one of these trustees.  Their email can be found at the Board of Trustees area at http://www.universitymethodist.org/board-of-trustees/

The Board of Trustees will be meeting around the middle of July to discuss and vote of the priority list.  When the date is set, we will inform the congregation.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend the meeting.
