2014 YEAR IN REVIEW
|
All of us at Art with a Heart wish you a healthy, happy, and artful New Year. As the year draws to a close, we reflect on Art with a Heart's accomplishments in 2014.
Programming
- Art with a Heart welcomed many new partners, including 14 schools, five recreational centers, three community centers, two treatment centers, and two shelters. With close to 70 community partners in 2014, Art with a Heart provided over 100,000 unique art experiences to children, youth, and adults in Baltimore.
- In June, Art with a Heart celebrated the ninth year of its Summer Job Program, a meaningful program that teaches youth important soft job skills while creating marketable works of art. In evaluating the success of the Program, we consider the feedback of our participants. One student said, "This program always ends up changing my life in multiple ways. The people here are amazing. Thank you so much for allowing me to stay in this program - I felt as though it was a privilege to be here."

- In 2014, Art with a Heart began new service partnerships with scholars from Bridge EdU, residents of Challengers Independent Living - Bert's Place, and students from Thread (formally Incentive Mentoring Program), bringing Art with a Heart's service-learning partnerships to 10, including: Academy for College and Career Exploration, Career Academy, The Choice Program, City Neighbors High School, Jemicy School, The Park School of Baltimore, and St. Elizabeth School.

Public Art
- With the help and support of the community, Art with a Heart completed six mosaic murals, one painted mural, and four large-scale public art installations.
- Throughout the year, the "Ashkemore" tree was on traveling exhibition at Baltimore Penn Station, Enoch Pratt Free Library, The Associated, and the Owings Mills and Park Heights JCC. In March 2014, the Art with a Heart team traveled to Ashkelon, Israel to complete the second Baltimore-Ashkelon Partnership tree engaging 250 community volunteers. Ashkelon's tree is on permanent exhibit in its municipal library. The Baltimore tree is now on permanent exhibit at the Southeast Anchor Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library.

Baltimore LED Portrait Project
Art with a Heart is a proud partner of Baltimore LED, a unique billboard showcase for Baltimore artists to entertain, educate, and inspire. Art with a Heart 2nd, 5th, and 7th grade students at Woodhome Elementary/Middle School created "Promise Portraits" to visually portray their promises for the future. Their artwork is currently being projected, through Baltimore LED's Art Billboard, at the corner of N. Charles Street and Lanvale Street, and will be on rotation for the next month.

A Winter Wonderland
Art with a Heart students at Glenmount Elementary/Middle School decked the halls of the school for the holidays with caroler portraits, stockings, snowflakes, life-size trees, and a 3D winter cityscape. Thank you to Art with a Heart's teachers, Sharon Smith and Nikki Fowlkes, who worked with the students to create and install Glenmount's winter wonderland.

The Walters' Sensory Morning
In December, Art with a Heart joined several other community organizations at The Walters Art Museum for an event designed specifically for children with Sensory Processing Disorders. Art with a Heart worked with children of all ages, and their parents, to decorate a large recycling bin using repurposed anesthesia lids. Once complete, this recycling bin will be donated to Art with a Heart's service-learning partner, St. Elizabeth School.

Shining Light on After-School Programs
In collaboration with Maryland Out of School Time Network and Lights On Afterschool, Art with a Heart worked with nearly 100 students at Arundel Elementary/Middle School to create lamps depicting their favorite after-school activities. The lamps will be given to Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Governor Martin O'Malley, Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown, Senator Bill Ferguson, Delegate Brooke Lierman, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, Gregory Thornton, Superintendent Lillian Lowery, and Executive Director of the Governor's Office for Children, Anne Sheridan. The lamps will "shine light" on the importance of quality and educational after-school programs.
