Dearest friends and colleagues,

I am often asked why I invest so much time and energy in social engagement. No, I'm not talking about sharing enticing food pictures on social media sites like Facebook or Instagram (GUILTY!). Social engagement refers to one's degree of participation in a community or society. These are the connections we create to bring us closer to the things we enjoy, value and wholeheartedly believe in, and bring us a sense of cohesiveness among a group of people. To me, investing in social engagement is investing in the well-being of our Miami.  It's about bringing people closer to one another and helping create common bonds, facilitating the sharing of ideas and fostering an environment where creating positive impacts is at the forefront. If you want to "up" your social engagement factor, here are some suggestions happening throughout September that may be just what you are looking for!
$15 - General Admission
 $50 - GGI Contributor ($15 + $35 Donation)

Tomorrow night, join the Good Government Initiative and New Leaders Council Miami at the Miami Center for Architecture & Design for Changing the (Old) Guard In Miami as graduates of Leadership Miami, Miami Fellows, New Leaders Council and The Beacon Council's New Leaders Task Force discuss how up-and-coming leaders are preparing to address Miami's challenges and seize its opportunities.

Ever wanted to participate in a leadership development program? Now is your chance to apply for the next class of Leadership Miami. The application is due on Friday, September 12th so be sure to apply HERE! I cannot emphasize enough how beneficial and influential my participation in Leadership Miami and the Miami Fellows Initiative has been in my personal, professional and civic life. Not only do you get to learn the ins and outs of what moves Miami and the challenges that we face, you get to experience this with a group of like-minded, forward thinking professionals that, like you, are looking to solve community issues and make Miami a thriving global city. I encourage you to participate in these programs and/or encourage young professionals within your organization to get involved.

September 21-22, 2014
$20 admission
Also on the horizon is the Social Good Summit Miami, a two-day conference examining the impact of technology and new media on social good initiatives locally. The conference centers around the question "What type of world do I want to live in by the year 2030" and unites global citizens around the world to unlock the potential of technology to make the world a better place. Sessions include topics cover everything from design, education, mindfulness, and of course, engagement. You can catch my discussion about "Does Engagement Matter" on Tuesday afternoon!  More Info

For those of you with an affinity for new technology and an insatiable appetite for knowledge, Social Media Week is serving up a week full of lessons on topics that show how social media is influencing the way we do business, experience brands, make our buying decisions and even enjoy a good old fashion game of football, a dining experience or even a weekend get away. The robust schedule provides learning, networking opportunities and insights from leading industry experts and influencers. There will be a session on Social Activism where I will share insights on how social technologies are changing the way people support and get involved with causes.

Interested in a FREE CAMPUS PASS?  The first person to tweet me (@estrellasibila) with "I WANT THAT PASS to #smwmiami" will win a free Campus Pass (valued up to $359) for access to the entire week of events, master classes, workshops and socials!

So what type of social engagement investments are you making in our Miami?  Feel free to share your thoughts and interests, and let me know if I can ever be of assistance.

Shining brightly,

Estrellita S. Sibila
