Coalition Issues Priorities for ESEA, Reacts to Alexander Proposal

The STEM Education Coalition sent a letter to the leaders of the House and Senate education committees outlining key principles that should be embodied in legislation to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, otherwise known as No Child Left Behind.

 The 114th U.S. Congress, infused with 71 new members elected last fall, will begin to hammer out a federal budget this month. In an era of tight spending and lingering economic malaise, this Congress-and the White House-might be tempted to limit funding for basic science in favor of applied research that has more direct payoffs. Politicians of both major parties have done so before. We urge them not to do it again and to instead renew a law that is vital to basic research.

In preparation for providing comment on the US Department of Education's broader regulations proposal, AACTE has developed an overview of the proposed regulations and a webinar that provides a walk-through of the regulations for members. They also have developed a template letter to help guide your response as well as another webinar to walk you through the submission process. Additionally, AACTE has offered a key perspective on the proposed regulations in the media, lending the profession's voice in dozens of outlets throughout the nation.

Washington Facts: STEM Edition

President Barack Obama, Tuesday night, in his State of the Union message to Congress advanced his idea of free tuition to Community Colleges for students who maintain a 2.5 grade average and make progress to complete their program.

For the Love of Science: New Raytheon Grants Help Teachers Raise the Next Generation of Engineers
Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) is awarding 36 Engineering is Elementary� (EiE) Scholarships to teachers in disadvantaged, rural or inner city schools across the country. Each teacher will receive $2,500 towards implementing the innovative EiE curriculum developed by the Museum of Science, Boston.

 

 

The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program
Buick is offering up to $25,000 per year for 50 first-time freshmen or existing college students, renewable for up to four years and one additional year for those entering a qualified five-year engineering program.
