Question of the Month:
How to prevent the dreaded summer "Brain Drain"?

Research shows that students who are not actively engaged in learning over the summer months start the school year behind where they ended the previous year.

Similarly, professionals who do not regularly exercise their ability to network, resource, and provide support to students who have experienced foster care will experience the dreaded "brain drain".

A Summer for National Partnership

Summer may be half over already but what a summer it has been! As we celebrate the 4th of July and delight in our favorite summer traditions, I am reminded of how wonderful it can be to join together with the rest of the United States!

As a nation, and as individuals, it is vital that we engage in activities to increase support, build networks, and share resources. FSM is constantly sharing our lessons learned with partners near and far, often gaining great insights to how others are finding success in their communities. We encourage you to share your great ideas with us too. The knowledge contained in your corner of the world could be vital for the work of someone across the country! It is in this spirit that I ask you to join FSM in celebrating the publication of our NEW National Postsecondary Support Map!

Through the support of Casey Family Programs, the National Postsecondary Support Map is available to provide resources on statewide education support organizations, state tuition waivers, and 4-year campus-based support programs for students who experience foster care throughout the United States. Increasing access and success in postsecondary education and professional careers for students who have experienced foster care will only be accomplished through the shared energy and efforts of partners throughout the country.

As we soak in the dog days of Summer, I ask that you take a moment to ask yourself how your efforts might contribute to this work. Will you share the National Postsecondary Support Map with a colleague or student across the country? Will you join in the fun at the FCCA-MI Dynamic Strides Picnic? Or maybe you will invite your students and colleagues for a slice of pizza on the Capitol lawn to benefit the Fostering Futures Scholarship? There are so many ways you can support our students who experience foster care, just don't forget to #MakeYourMarkFSM!

Together, we can collectively impact the education to career pipeline for students who have experienced foster care in our communities, in our states, and across the country!

Take care,
Maddy
