Dear library patrons and friends,

I am grateful for the opportunity to be involved in our new building project. I have had the chance to see a new public library building take form, first on paper, and now finally in-person.

The building has gone from looking massive, to small, and now perfectly situated in its place next to the Edgartown School.

As I toured the site recently with a representative from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, I could clearly visualize how bright our future will be.

Yes, we will need to be intentional about bringing charm and fostering community in a new and larger space, but luckily for us, we have a staff that naturally bears that gift.

I cannot wait to share this gift with all of you. Until then, please join us in savoring every moment in our wonderfully charming Carnegie building, home to Edgartown's library since 1904. We have some terrific programs lined up, as perfectly eclectic as our staff and all of you.

Warmly,

Jill Dugas Hughes

Director

Tuesday Night Films at the Library:
One Series Ends, Another Begins

Our March and April film series, Hitting the Road, concludes with two screenings this month. Later this month, we're planning to launch a mini-series of four films, entitled Meet the Press, also on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m.,

Here are the concluding films in the Hitting the Road series:

April 7: Sideways

With its off-kilter humor and believable characters, this sensitive tale of two mismatched friends on a bachelor weekend is both insightful and hilarious. Directed by Alexander Payne (United States, 2004).

April 14: On My Way

Catherine Deneuve stars as a woman who goes out for a pack of smokes and ends up on a journey of self-discovery through the tiny villages of rural France. Directed by Emmanuelle Bercot (France, 2014).

Meet the Press, our April-into-May film series, starts out this way:

 April 21: Network

An Oscar-winning satire that has never been more timely. With flawless performances, and a brilliant and ambitious screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky; directed by Sidney Lumet. (United States, 1976)

April 28: Kill the Messenger

This tense dramatic thriller is based on the true story of an investigative journalist's unearthing of a dangerous government secret. Directed by Michael Cuesta. (United States, 2014)

Join Us to Celebrate
National Poetry Month:
Wednesday, April 22

As our island finally emerges from its snowbound winter, each sign of spring seems worthy of celebration. Join us  Wednesday  evening,  April 22 , when poet-laureates Steve Ewing and Rachel Baird present an evening of their Vineyard poetry.
The words -- wise, witty, and beautiful-- begin to flow at  6:30 , and refreshments will be served.

Learn About Horseshoe Crabs,
And Join in Survey Efforts:
Wednesday, April 29, at 5:30 pm

Fred Hotchkiss of the Marine Paleobiological Research Institute and Susie Bowman, teacher-naturalist at Felix Neck and coordinator of the Island's Spawning Horseshoe Crab Surveys, will present a free program about horseshoe crabs. They'll tell the story of these amazing living fossils, and they will invite Islanders to help gather data on Island horseshoe crabs at the peak of their mating and egg-laying this spring.
Book Group Meets
The Edgartown Library book group meets at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, to discuss Will Schwalbe's 2012 memoir, The End of Your Life Book Club. It's the story of an informal book club of two people -- the author, and his mother, who was then dying of cancer. Salon Magazine calls it "a tribute to a remarkable woman and an exemplary reader."

We have copies of this book available at the library desk, and gatherings of the book group are open to all. The book club, led by Director, Jill Dugas Hughes, meets monthly.
Opera Club Meets  Sunday, April 26

The Edgartown Library continues its monthly gatherings of the Opera Club, for all those who love (and would like to learn more about) the art of classical singing.

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, the library will present a screening of Giacomo Puccini's Turandot. The Metropolitan Opera's sumptuous production of Puccini's exciting and majestic final opera is conducted by James Levine, starring Eva Marton in the title role and Placido Domingo as Calaf.

All adults welcome to this free program.
Make this cake at the April decorating class.
Let Them Decorate Cake!

Donna Blackburn's Cake of the Month Club meets downstairs in the library at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. Bring one 9-inch layer of cake for this adult program, and Donna will show you how to decorate it with an "April Showers and May Flowers" theme.

Meanwhile, our knitting group continues to meet Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. -- and no advance signup is necessary. Just bring your latest project along and join in.
Slow Cooking Class
Continues in April

Adventures in Slow Cooking, the monthly class led by Virginia Munro of our library staff, continues with a free program at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 30. Virginia will share her slow-cooker recipe for savory tortilla soup, just in time for the celebrations of Cinco de Mayo.

Space is limited for this free, adult program, so be sure to call the library to register.
April in the Children's Room

The Children's Room has a full calendar of Saturday events during April, as well as a busy schedule during school vacation week, offering activities for kids whose families aren't traveling during the break. Here's the lineup:

Saturday, April 4, 2 pm: Stop in to decorate Easter eggs and hear bunny stories.

Saturday, April 11, 2 pm: Spring crafts are today's program, and the format is strictly drop-in. Get creative with our rich supply of craft materials.

Tuesday, April 21 (vacation week), 2 pm: Eric Alexander presents another program in his popular children's series, playfully entitled "From Yucky to Yummy," exploring new food items from around the world.

Wednesday, April 22, 2 pm: We'll celebrate Earth Day by starting some plants.

Thursday, April 23, 2 pm: Elyce Bonnell will lead an introduction to sign language for children.

Friday, April 24, 2 pm: Join us for a children's Mystery Party -- enacting the crime and then sleuthing out the culprit.

Saturday, April 25, 2 pm: Eli Bonnell presents a children's program all about arrowheads.
