GA. HAS FEWER LANE CLOSURES DURING HOLIDAYS

The Georgia Department of Transportation is curtailing its construction lane closures during the Christmas and New Year's holidays on interstates and major state routes near tourist locations and large shopping centers.

Construction-related lane closures are restricted between 5 a.m. Dec. 23 and 10 p.m. Dec. 28 and again from 5 a.m. Dec. 31 to 5 a.m. Jan. 2 to allow for increased holiday traffic.

The restriction does not include emergency lane closures that may be necessary. Crews may still be working near highways and some long-term lane closures may remain in place for safety r

easons. Please obey posted speed limits and allow extra travel time for congested highways.

If you're planning on heading north through the metro Atlanta area, real-time traffic information is available by calling 511, using the "Georgia 511" mobile app or logging on to www.511ga.org. An automated voice recognition system guides the phone service, but callers may also reach live operators to report accidents or congestion, request HERO (Highway Emergency Response Operators) assistance or obtain additional information.

HERO assistance is available only in the metro Atlanta area.

FRANKLY SPEAKING

A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS REMINDER

"Christmas Time is Here...." sing the children in the 1965 TV animated special, "A Charlie Brown Christmas." The song is melodic, poignant, somewhat bittersweet. Every time I hear it, I remember being a kid, listening to it on TV for the first time and feeling a sense of longing.

The other night, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" was broadcast, as it has each year for 50 seasons, and I couldn't help but watch it again. Part of its appeal is the music; Vince Guaraldi's jazzy score holds up

well, and I still find myself tapping time to the popular tune, "Linus and Lucy" -- and the happy freedom of the tune "Skating" is

exhilarating.

But there is more to the show's appeal than the music. "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz always maintained that his comic strip was really for adults, and much of the lasting popularity of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" is that it is enjoyed on several levels. Children can relate easily to the kids and to Snoopy; adults can relate to the theme that the real message of Christmas sometimes gets lost in the commercial trappings of the holiday and that intrinsic beauty can be found all around us.

A "Charlie Brown Christmas tree" has entered the vernacular so pervasively that everyone knows what it means. In the TV show, Charlie Brown is the first to recognize the beauty in a scrawny, sad tree that just needs a little love.

The show was groundbreaking for its time for a couple of reasons: There is no laugh track, which was expected in those days, and Biblical text was included. Linus reads from the Book of Luke about the meaning of the season, a moment that has been called "the most magical two minutes in all of TV animation."

At center stage, Linus says, in part: "...For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying: 'Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth, peace and goodwill towards men.' "

That's not something one would expect in a cartoon.

This Christmas, amid the holly and the egg nog and the brightly wrapped gifts, reflect upon the season.

As the song notes, "Christmas time is here / We'll be drawing near / Oh, that we could always see / Such spirit through the year...."

Merry Christmas.
