Pequot Library's Mid-Winter Sale

Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 17-18

70 Pequot Avenue

Southport, CT  Daily 9am to 5pm FREE!

Mark Naftalin & Friends to Perform LIVE on WPKN 89.5-FM

Broadcast times: Saturday 12noon to 1pm & Sunday 1pm to 2pm

This weekend it's time again for the "Mid-Winter Book Sale" held at the lovely Pequot Library in Southport (Fairfield), Connecticut.

This event is particularly special, said library spokesman Adair Heitmann, because about 2,000 vinyl records will be available for purchase and keyboard great Mark Naftalin & Friends will perform.

Pequot's music specialist, volunteer Paige Gillies, said in a statement: "As the result of a mammoth donation, this sale will feature vinyl in outstanding condition, particularly in the jazz and classical categories. "There are some sealed albums and many in pristine condition. Jazz includes albums from Verve, Jazzology, Citi and Blue Note, and classical albums are 90 percent European imports. As always, there is plenty of rock 'n' roll and other genres."

Mark Naftalin, the former Paul Butterfield Blues Band keyboard player, will be joined by Paul Gabriel (Paul Gabriel Band), guitar and vocals; Mark Zaretsky (Cobalt Rhythm Kings), harmonica and vocals; Peter Menta (Washboard Slim & The Bluelights), washboard, harmonica and vocals; Daniel J (The Contemporary Bluesman), guitar, harmonica and vocals; and several others. Acoustic performances will be Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m.  Both days will be broadcast LIVE on community radio station-WPKN 89.5-FM.

Naftalin is scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April ceremonies with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, along with such other musicians as Ringo Starr and Green Day. Naftalin played the piano on "Born in Chicago" and all of the Butterfield classics and both performed and recorded with his late buddy Mike Bloomfield on his solo work.

Many categories of books will be featured including:  fiction, classics, mystery, biography, history, cookbooks, including regional American cookbooks, and comics from the 1970s to 1990s. Connecticut books include: Aaron Burr's "The Proud Pretender" and Burr's "A Romantic Biography"; "Greens Farms, Connecticut: the Old West Parish of Fairfield," 1933; and books on Southport, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Easton and Weston.

If snow or other weather-related conditions cause the library to be closed on Saturday or Sunday, the book sale will resume on Monday, Jan. 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

WPKN will hold it's On-Air Winter Fund Drive from Wednesday, January 28th through Sunday, February 8th.  It will kick-off on Wednesday and Thursday with 2-days devoted to great guitar music from all over the planet - GUITAR GODS.  In typical WPKN fashion all manner of 'guitars' from countries the world over will be exposed. By GODS we use the gender-neutral meaning - there will be plenty of female shredders and pickers in the mix! Naturally.

For the balance of the days, we are asking WPKN programmers to pursue their essential programming. The only caveat is to have them bring a few of their favorite musical goodies- CD's, LP's or Box Sets-  that might tempt you as a music premium for a pledge of financial support to WPKN 89.5-FM.

We hope you will tune in and remember that more than 60% of our budget is derived from your generosity during these on-air drives.

Our goal is to deliver WPKN programming in an environment that will entertain and educate.

FAQ's

How will the car be picked up?

We will arrange to have your vehicle towed away at a scheduled time convenient for you. The vehicle will be picked up by a licensed tow company at no cost to you and will be taken to our sale location.

How long will it take to pick up my car?

We will contact you to schedule an appointment within two to three business days at the most. If you need your car picked up sooner, please call us toll-free at 877-WPKN-CAR or 877-975-6227 seven days a week. We may be able to make those arrangements as well.

How does the new law effect my tax deduction?

Donors will no longer be responsible for determining the deductible value of their donation. Instead, they will receive IRS Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes if the proceeds from the sale exceed $500, stating the amount of the gross proceeds from the sale of the donated vehicle. The amount listed on IRS Form 1098-C will be the gross proceeds of the deductible donation.

Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?

Yes, our driver will issue a receipt at the time of pick-up. This is not your final tax receipt unless the sale of your vehicle does not exceed $500. This initial acknowledgement will indicate your name as well as the year, make, model and condition of the car you are donating. It will be your only receipt if your vehicle sells for less than $500. An IRS Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes will be mailed to you within 30 days of the sale stating the amount of gross proceeds received from your car, provided your vehicle sold for more than $500. This will be your tax receipt for your charitable contribution.

How is the value determined on the vehicle donated?

The value is determined by the gross proceeds raised from the sale of the donated vehicle. You no longer have the burden of determining the value yourself.

What can I claim as a deduction?

According to the tax law effective January 1, 2005, if the claimed value of the donated vehicle exceeds $500, the taxpayer is limited to the gross proceeds of the sale.

What if my car is valued over $5000?

Effective January 1, 2005, you will no longer be required to have vehicles appraised. The value you may claim will be the amount of gross proceeds received from your vehicle.

Does my car have to be running to donate it?

In some cases we can take your car, running or not. However, it must have an engine and be towable. Contact a representative at 877-WPKN-CAR or 877-975-6227 to find out if your vehicle qualifies for pick-up.
