In the earlier part of the twentieth century, entertainment was all about assimilation, integration and Americanism. Then came Allan Sherman. In his 1962 comedy album, My Son, The Folk Singer, Sherman took familiar folk songs and substituted hilarious new lyrics with a suburban, Jewish sensibility. He was a highly unlikely pop star and yet so cool President John F. Kennedy was heard singing his songs. Author Mark Cohen shares the story of Allan Sherman over authentic Jewish and Eastern European food provided by Saul's, one of the Bay Area's top delicatessens. Attendees will be treated to audio clips of famous as well as previously unreleased Sherman recordings, such as the gem 76 Sol Cohens.
