As the weather turns brisk, the leaves begin to change, and another program year begins here at Holy Comforter, it's also time to renew our commitment to assist our brothers and sisters in need and to work for peace and justice for all.  This newsletter highlights some of the opportunities available to our parish to be a part of this important work!  We invite you to read and then get in touch with us with your questions and ideas.

Please also stop by the Outreach table at the upcoming Parish Ministry Fair on Sunday, September 28.  We've got opportunities for all of God's gifted and generous people here at CHC!

Help the Homeless Mini-Walk and visit from David Wolf of Samaritan Ministry

Sunday, October 12, from 10 - 10:50 on the beautiful CHC campus

Join us for our fourth annual Help the Homeless Mini-Walk on Sunday, October 12This is a multi-generational event that all adults, youth, and children are encouraged to attend.  All proceeds will be donated to Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington (SMGW), a local organization run by a partnership of Episcopal and other churches in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC.  SMGW provides services to help our area's homeless with housing and employment search guidance, coaching, referrals to partner service providers, and other assistance to assist the homeless and others in need.

All Sunday School classes will be participating.  Registration is encouraged but not required.  Walkers will travel through several activity stations, including answering trivia on homelessness, meeting a SMGW representative, building a shelter, and participating in a food pantry relay race.  Activities will be modified for adults and our youngest children.

We will also be privileged to welcome the Rev. David Wolf, Executive Director of SMGW, who will be participating in our program that day and in Sunday services.  Registration details for the mini-walk can be found at the Children & Student Ministries table in the Narthex or by contacting Children's Ministries Director Lisa Arthur.

Our Daily Bread

Get ready for deliveries on Sunday, November 9! Our Daily Bread

Did you know that over the past year Holy Comforter parishioners delivered over 3,000 pounds of groceries to the needy in our area last year through the Our Daily Bread (ODB) ministry?  Our contributions included non-perishable foods, fresh produce and bread, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and grocery gift cards.  Our next deliveries to 30 ODB client families will take place on Sunday, November 9. We have a lot of work to do before then, and all are welcome and invited to participate! We have jobs for everyone, from children and families to teens needing service hours to adults of all ages.  All are invited to help us prepare for the deliveries and to experience the blessing of direct service to our neighbors in need.

On Sunday, October 26, during the Adult Form, representatives from Our Daily Bread will be sharing more information about the organizations and the ways we can help them serve low-income families and those struggling with food insecurity.  In the meantime, please contact either Susan McGuire or Chris Ostendorff if you'd like more information or would like to help with packing (on Saturday, November 8), deliveries (on November 9), shopping, loading cars, making phone calls, or other work in connection with this project.

The 8th Annual Alternative Gift Fair

Saturday, December 6 and Sunday, December 7

Save the date!  At this popular annual event, we will offer products from Fair Trade Winds in Fairfax, including jewelry, games and toys, scarves, household goods, Christmas ornaments and other handmade unique gifts by artisans from around the world.  Fair Trade Winds sells only fair trade items, which means the artisans receive a fair portion of the sales price, and their work promotes a strong local economy.  Get all your Christmas shopping done in one weekend, without going to the mall, and know that you will make life better for someone who could use a hand up.  If you have any questions or would like to help out at this event, please contact Kathy Brown

FACETS Hypothermia Prevention Shelter
January 4 - 10, 2015
The evening nip in the air lets us know that cold winter weather is around the corner!  It's time to start preparations for our annual turn to host the Hypothermia Prevention Shelter in partnership with FACETS.  This year, our shelter will take place right after holidays, on January 4 - 10, 2015.  For six evenings, Holy Comforter will provide hospitality for 20 people through meals, a warm place to stay and our welcoming congregation.  Opportunities to help abound, and include preparing and serving meals, visiting with our guests, and helping them with transportation to and from our church.  Please stay tuned for sign-up sheets and more information at the Parish Ministry Fair, or contact Philene Ware Dunn.  At our Sunday December 7 Adult Forum, our Hypothermia Shelter team will be presenting more information on our plans for this year.

Getting to Know the FACETS Hot Meals Program Ministry

Stop by the McGill Hall kitchen on the second Sunday of every month, and you'll see a busy team of folks preparing a healthy and rib-sticking meal of chili, baked potatoes, and sides for local homeless in our area.  Our church has been participating in the FACETS Hot Meals for 25 years.  Volunteers working through faith communities such as Holy Comforter prepare and serve meals every evening of the year, to about 37,000 homeless families and individuals who live outdoors or temporarily in two motels along Lee Highway in Fairfax.  More than 1,000 volunteers participate from 35 faith partners.  The coordinator for the CHC program is Ben Gregg, who has been leading our efforts since the beginning of our program, on Mother's Day 1989.

Our second-Sunday meal preparation team meets from 4 - 6 pm in the kitchen, and will meet next on Sunday, October 12.  If you'd like to join the team or get more information about our program, contact Ben.  More information about the FACETS Hot Meals program can be found here.

Especially for families . . . .

Our Children's Ministries team is putting together a series of meaningful outreach and mission activities for the 2014-2015 program year that will allow our young people to experience service to others and care for God's world.  Our children will participate in the October mini-walk for Samaritan Ministry, have special roles in support of the November Our Daily Bread deliveries and the January Hypothermia Shelter, do an Earth Day project in April, participate in a project to honor those who gave their life for our country over Memorial Day, and more.  The children also regularly support a child in Indonesia with their faithful weekly collections taken during Sunday School and Children's Chapel.

Stay tuned for more details on these events and more!  If you have any suggestions or would like to get involved in planning for these or other service opportunities, please contact Lisa Arthur.  We also want to share information about service opportunities that might be of interest to individual families.  Here is a resource here.  If you know of other organizations or projects that might be of interest to our ministry here at Holy Comforter or for individuals, please forward them to us!  We'd love to spread the word.

More from the Outreach Team

Peace & Justice and Outreach teams combining forces

The Peace & Justice and Outreach Teams will work together as one stronger group this year!  Together we will help coordinate our parish's efforts to serve our brothers and sisters in need, and support local, national, and global efforts to fulfill our baptismal covenant to "strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being."  Look for more information on opportunities and events in our parish's bulletin and e-news, and at the Outreach display in the Narthex.

Our team meets once a month at the church, and we welcome all to join us.  If you would like more information, please contact Susan McGuire or stop by our table at the Parish Ministry Fair.  We look forward to talking to you!

CHC Community Outreach Grants

Applications due November 3

We will shortly begin evaluating and making decisions on the allocation of funds designated by the Vestry to assist the poor, sick, oppressed, and others in need.  As part of this process, the Outreach Team is accepting applications for grant funding from local and other non-profit organizations that serve those in need.  We are particularly interested in assisting organizations with which members of our congregation work or volunteer.

If you know of an organization that would benefit from our parish's assistance, please feel free to share with them a copy of our short 2014 grant application.  Completed applications are due by November 3.  For further information, please contact Susan McGuire.
