An Affordable Approach to Outdoor Living
by Mike Martin

Entertaining the thought of a beautiful patio gently nestled in a stunning perennial garden in your back yard is a dream shared by many hard working people. A "sanctuary," if you will, to come home to after a long day's work that would allow one to gently ease into the peace of a quiet evening.

Maybe your dream also holds the soothing sound of flowing water as you ease back in your chair and enjoy the glowing embers in your fire pit. And then - "SNAP!" - you are jolted back to reality with the thought, "I could never afford that." Actually, you can, as long as you keep the key elements in mind and here's how you go about doing just that.

The ever-alluring elements of fire, the soothing sound of water, the  enchantment of beautiful colors, and the serenity of a defined space are the attractions here. Fire is just as lovely in a stone fire pit as a $17,000 fire place, and it can be enjoyed by m ore people at the same time.

You don't need elaborate streams and waterfalls to enjoy the soothing sound water creates when splashing over a boulder. Perennial flowers are nature's most beautifully adorned display of color and they're abs olutely inexpensive. Stunningly gorgeous flagstone creates a wonderful patio and seating walls to complete this very affordable ensemble.

Remember the effect of the elements and you'll soon be enjoying the lifestyle you may have thought was beyond your investing range. And, if you need help, give Earthadelic a call!

Digging In:  A Brief History of Gardening Style

by Mel Kersey

Have you ever created a garden bed from scratch? What  shape did you choose to dig the border of that bed: was it angled with geometrical precision, or was   it a wavy, curving line? You might not know that choosing either of these styles involves two different schools of garden design rooted in the 18th century. There was the French style of gardening, in which garden beds and plants were given artificial geometrical shapes, versus the English "line of beauty" with its curving, winding and more "natural" designs.

In the 1700s, this debate between the French and English styles of gardening involved a contrast between "Art" and "Nature." Art is created by humans, while Nature is not. Art is therefore "artificial," while Nature is, you guessed it, "natural." What's the point, you may ask?

Well, take the incredible gardens of the French palace of Versailles, for example. At Versailles, nature is not left to its own designs. Everything is maintained with geometrical precision, from the layout of the pathways, hedges and beds to the intricate shapes of the shrubs and water fountains. In the French school of gardening, humans triumph over nature. This symbolic triumph is seen in every geometrical, angled line of Versailles.

The English school of gardening, on the other hand, regarded Versailles as a virtual torture chamber where Mother Nature was being violated by an army of engineers, gardeners and laborers. This English distaste for forcing human desi   gns upon the natural landscape was expressed in poetry, painting as well as in books on the aesthetics of nature and gardening. One of the most

influential 18th century writers on English gardening was William Hogarth. For Hogarth, the most beautiful scenes in nature, whether a mountain range, a winding river or a female body, featured a curving "line of beauty." This waving, winding serpentine line signified the essence of natural beauty, and he used this line in all of his garden designs. This curving, undulating element of landscape design can be seen even today in the grounds of manor houses and parks throughout the British Isles.

So the next time you pick up your gardening tools, you may ask yourself, "Am I gardening for Art or for Nature? For France, or for England?" Just don't say it out loud, your neighbors might be listening on the other side of the fence.

The Andre Project

The Objectives:  Pam and Steve Andre wanted an intimate outdoor living area that would: (1) accommodate many guests with comfortable seating, a fire place and a stunning array of color; and (2) expand the experience of their existing large and beautiful screened in back porch.

The Challenge:  The Andres were working with a fixed budget, and were firm on the elements they had to have in order to move ahead with the project.

The Design Solution:  The design approach was filled with simple elegance. It features a flagstone walkway that gently meanders to a matching patio and fire pit capped in natural stone, along with a serpentine seating wall that creates an enjo   yable place to take in the fire. And finally, the entire outdoor living space is surrounded by a beautiful perennial garden and a custom, raised organic gardening bed for herbs and vegetables.

The Installation ApproachOn the very first day, Steve noticed that his firepit was going to be larger than he had expected. Once this was brought to the hardscape team's attention, they were able to collaborate with him to ensure everything was exactly how he pictured it. The foundation was laid in a timely manner followed by the stonework. Our hardscape craftsmen produced their usual artwork by laying multicolored flagstone onto the firepit and the surrounding seating wall. When Steve saw the results after returning from work that day, his wide-eyed expression and smile let the team know they had exceeded the customer's expectations once again. The flagstone patio and planter were installed next, completing the project.

The Result:  The design approach was filled with simple elegance. It features a flagstone walkway that gently meanders to a matching patio and fire pit capped in natural stone, along with a serpentine seating wall that creates an enjoyable place to take in the fire. And finally, the entire outdoor living space is surrounded by a beautiful perennial garden and a custom, raised organic gardening bed for herbs and vegetables.

Going Green with a Natural Swimming Pool
 by Jason Murrell
Beat the Summer Heat, and Save the Environment

As wonderful and fun-filled as our summers can be around east Tennessee, the overwhelming heat can cause us to run for the relief of the indoor A.C. cooling unit. But there are options for us outdoors; we just need to create the proper spaces for relief. Of course we all know the swimming pool as one of our favorite ways to beat the heat, but are you familiar with the idea of a "natural pool" or "swimming pond?" This chemical-free water gardening and swimming pool in one feature can truly give you the best of both worlds.

Design options are almost limitless, allowing virtually any sized space to be transformed into something that is not only beautiful and cleansing for the environment, but also an ideal place to find relief from scorching summer sun. Generally, the planting area (called the regeneration zone) of the natural pool is separated structurally from the main swimming area. This allows the water to be cleaned by the plants while maintaining a clear open area fo  r swimming. As the water is recirculated throughout the system, the plants remove contaminants from the water while an abundance of smaller rocks allow beneficial bacteria to attach, acting as biological filtration. A hybrid system is another possibility, with separate spaces for the planting and swimming. In this case, water is still purified through the regeneration zone, but structurally separated from the swimming area.

Whether you have an existing pool that could be transformed into a natural pond, or just an area that is perfect for a cooling, relaxing and transforming swimming pond, this can be an environmentally safe option for relief from the summer heat. These water features are a valuable asset to your property, they benefit the environment, and they will enhance your personal enjoyment in your backyard sanctuary.
