MORE THAN WE CAN IMAGINE

"What God has planned for us is more than eyes have seen or ears have heard. It has never even entered our minds."

                  ~ 1 Corinthians 2:9, (CEV, adapted)

When Flora Slosson Wuellner received news that her beloved's cancer, many years in remission, had returned, it was a jolt to her spiritual balance.  It was difficult for her to see or think of anything else.  She wrote: ". . . it seems unbelievable that the sun rises and sets, traffic keeps rolling, and thousands go about their own business-even though our own sun stands still, and everything for us suddenly stops. Is there anyone who really hears or cares? " (Miracle: When Christ Touches Our Deepest Need, 20).

Trying circumstances are so potent that it is difficult to see anything else. The surface disturbance can be so intense, it is difficult to imagine or see that God is at work on a deeper level, beyond the surface, at the foundation of all that is grace.

Does God hear our cries for mercy and help?

In my message this Sunday from Mark 10: 46-51 Bartimaeus shouts out to Jesus, "Heir of David, have mercy on me!" (Mark 10:48). Bartimaeus is blind and is tired of relying on others for his sustenance.   With Jesus, he has the spiritual vision to see beyond his circumstance to the possibility of healing.   With hope, he calls out.

Yet even as he calls out Bartimaeus can't help but wonder, "Will Jesus hear me?  If so, will he care?"  The turning point comes when Jesus answers the questions with a question:  "What do you want me to do for you?"

The compassionate question from Jesus to Bartimaeus is a question with staying power.  How would you answer the question from Jesus?  This Sunday we'll reflect further on God's healing heart as revealed through Jesus.  God has more planned for us than we can imagine for ourselves.

Faithfully,

Rev. Dwayne

HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Please join local healing and therapeutic practitioner

Elizabeth McCain in a three week series on holiday hope and hopefulness.

The holiday season can be a difficult time of year for many of us. No matter what kind of painful past memories we have, we can choose to embrace a sense of hope and a more positive attitude during this time of year and beyond. In these sessions, learn how to reframe stories from the past, experience a body/mind/spirit connection through acupressure and energy healing, develop spiritual practices (such as meditation and gratitude practices), and feel a sense of belonging and joy within yourself, your family, and your community.

Rev. Elizabeth McCain is an interfaith minister, grief counselor, spiritual mentor, energy healer, and professional storyteller in Takoma Park, Md. Whether ministering, counseling, or performing, she believes that sharing and reframing our personal stories heals hearts, creates community, and changes the world. Elizabeth specializes in helping the LGBTQ community and our allies live more meaningful and joyful lives. To learn more about her work, go to www.elizabethmccain.com.

Dates: Dec 4, 11, 18

Time: 7-8:30

Location: MCCDC

Workshop is free and donations are appreciated.

MCC STATEMENT

OF FAITH REPORT

The report presents the results of the first round of surveys developed by the Commission on the MCC Statement of Faith. Along with feedback forms on the MCC denominational website, the surveys were launched with the intention of initiating a grass-roots dialogue with the various constituencies of MCC as we begin our task: to review, renew, and update our MCC Statement of Faith as authorized by the 2013 General Conference.

SUNDAY, NOV. 23

mark your calendars

congregational meeting-Nov. 23

Please save the date for the Annual Congregational Meeting/Elections on November 23. We will vote on new board members, by-law changes, and the 2015 Budget.

BOARD CANDIDATES

Dave Jenkins

Please accept my request for consideration for re-nomination as a member for the MCCDC Board of Directors.  The past year of my service as a member has been highly rewarding. I've gained so much from my association with both my fellow board members but by increasing my involvement in the church I've grown spiritually and gained new friends. I truly value my association with the church and by serving have been able to give back and hopefully show my gratitude for being allowed to serve.

I've attached my current resume for your consideration. In addition to the leadership and people skills evidenced in the resume, I think my service on the board and with the church has demonstrated that I bring an independent mind and judgment. I listen carefully to the board discussions, value everyone's contribution but at the end of the day when it's time to vote on an issue before the board, I always pause to consider what's in the best interests of the Church, the congregation and the community we serve.

I believe I've made valuable contributions as a member and would appreciate the opportunity for continuing my service in this or any other role that will benefit MCCDC.

Mark Kornmann

I would like to request that my name be put before the congregation for a position on the Board of Directors. I have been a Board member for the past two years and have served as the at-large member and currently as the Vice-Moderator.

I feel that during the past two years, the Board of Directors have taken on a very ambitious agenda to help the church in reaching its members and also those who have not yet found a church home.

While we have accomplished a great deal, we still have a great deal of work to accomplish. I feel confident that the Board, the Trustees, and the Staff can work effectively together with the congregation to make things happen inside MCCDC and beyond.

Bobbi Strang

In November of 2011 I arrived in DC nearly broken from the strain of transition and found MCCDC with the help of my partner, Elodie Huttner.  It was the first time in my life that I stood in a church where I felt safe to be me.  Since then, I have become active with Eclectic Praise and in the community.

Now, I would like to take on more.  I have about ten years management experience and serve on the boards of the Gertrude Stein Democrats and GLOV (Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence).  I have learned to take the long view and look towards the long term interests of an organization while responding to short term needs.

I know I can make a positive contribution on the Board of Directors and I want to support my church family in this way.

APPLY TO BE A WHITE HOUSE FELLOW
Applications are now open to be a 2015-2016 White House Fellow. Applications will be open until January 15, 2015 -- please help us spread the word! President Lyndon B. Johnson established the President's Commission on White House Fellowships 50 years ago, and over the course of nine presidential administrations -- four Democrat and five Republican -- the nonpartisan White House Fellows program has become the na...tion's premier fellowship for public service and leadership. The program's mission is to expose Fellows to first-hand, high-level experience in the federal government.

The program consists of a full-time work placement in the offices of Cabinet Secretaries, senior White House staff, and other high-ranking Administration officials. During their year in Washington, D.C., White House Fellows also participate in a robust education program designed to provide a behind-the-scenes look into the inner workings of the federal government. It is an extraordinary year that yields a lifetime of rewards.

Find out more about the White House Fellows program  at http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/fellows/application
