Voices of Hope Monthly Newsletter, February 2015
Thanks for subscribing to the monthly newsletter for Voices of Hope! We appreciate your interest in our organization and our mission; to help fund the ongoing research to find a cure for cancer. Look here every month for our most recent news, our upcoming events, and ways that you can help. As long as there is research to be done, our voices of hope will sing out for the cure!
Joy in the Midst of the February Blues
Those of us in the Boston area are pretty well fed up with winter at this point. We've got mounds of snow on our lawns, in the streets, and on our roofs. It's the coldest part of winter, and for some of us it seems as though the snow will never melt.

What is sometimes easy to forget is that--while it's cold and snowy now--the light is growing greater every day.

Spring is on the way. That yearly reminder of life and hope is just around the corner. And just when it seems as though winter will never end, the breezes will warm and crocuses will pop up through the melting snow.

You never can tell when good things may happen. Earlier this month, we got a call about a school in New Jersey. Some theater students at Toms River High School saw a presentation on VOH back in December at the Northeast Education Theater Conference, and they were so moved that they took up a collection for us. The call was to let us know that we'll be getting a check for $2500 from these generous students!

Hope is always there, just around the corner, sometimes in places you'd never expect. Rays of light come creeping back in, warming our hearts and bringing us joy, even in the midst of the February blues.
First Annual VOH Tennis Tournament!

On Sunday, May 17th, Voices of Hope will be hosting our first ever tennis tournament at the Reading High School and Memorial Park tennis courts.

Come out for a day of fun and prizes! Play begins at 9 am, and all skill levels are welcome. We'll be running a compass format, so you get to keep playing even after a loss, and that means more fun for everyone. The tournament is for doubles, but don't let the lack of a partner stop you. You can sign up as a team or come sign up alone and we'll find you a teammate. Mixed teams are welcome, as well.

The cost is $50 per person, which includes lunch. All players will receive a prize, but we'll also be giving out special prizes for the best dressed team, sportsmanship, team spirit, and best effort.

Want to register?  Have a question? Please contact tournament director Chrissy Cerretani at [email protected].  Registration checks should be made out to Voices of Hope, and mailed to:
Greg Chastain, 266 Washington St, Winchester MA, 01890.

Godspell Update!

Godspell rehearsals are well underway, and our cast is sounding fantastic. One of the joys of being part of Voices of Hope is the chance to witness first hand the dedication and efforts of such a talented group of people. The beautiful music is coming to life with energy and enthusiasm--trust us, you do not want to miss this show!

Although the performance is still over two months away, the house is already half sold. Don't wait, buy your tickets today!
Recent Events

Despite the weather, we did manage to get out on two occasions!

We sang the National Anthem at Pink the Rink Night
at Haverhill High School. Thank you to the Haverhill Pentucket North Andover Girls Varsity Hockey Team for inviting us to this special event, which raises awareness for breast cancer and raised $900 for Voices of Hope. Congratulations on your win!

VOH was the featured entertainment at the Eastern Star Chapters Luncheon, where we performed a one act cabaret.  We were honored to be asked to perform, and would like to thank everyone who braved the slushy streets to attend.

We'd also like to thank Whole Foods for a very generous donation from their 5% Giving Day, and thank each and every one of you who came out to shop that day.

Congratulations to Alison Shea, winner of our opportunity to sing at the Celtics!  Look for Alison and the rest of VOH on the court for the National Anthem, March 1st.

Spotlight on the Consoli Family

Voices of Hope is lucky in the many, many members that lend their talents and efforts to our cause. From our artistic team to our technical team to our management team, from our first time performers all the way to our veterans of the very first show, everyone brings something special and unique to the process. Some of us bring our vision, some of us bring our labor, and some of us bring something even more personal than that.

Our children.

Mike and Beth Consoli sit on the VOH board, and are two of our most veteran members. Mike performed in the very first show, and Beth joined the following year for our first annual fall gala. They've been to countless meetings, rehearsals, and performances, but they don't come alone. Instead they bring along two of our very youngest members. Nicholas--who was only a toddler when VOH was founded--and Anna--who was still on the way--have been part of the VOH family since the beginning. They fundraise and network right alongside their parents, and have even been performing since the ages of six and three.

To juggle rehearsing with childcare isn't an easy task, but both Mike and Beth say it's worth it. Not only does it keep them doing things actively as a family together, it is also teaching the children valuable lessons about helping others, and giving of yourself. They understand that by participating in VOH they are helping people who are very sick, and the passion to help others has taken root inside them. The children have planned their own VOH fundraisers-like summer lemonade stands or winter candy cane sales-as well as helping with the Consoli's annual Bounce for the Cure Lawn Party, where they fill their yard with bouncey castles, cotton candy, and snow cones, and fill a donation jar to the brim for VOH.

As for what the kids say, well, Nicholas, who is now eight, loves to be in the shows, and says that he'd choose Bounce for the Cure over his own birthday party. Anna, who is five, says she likes "being helpful for people who need it," as well having everyone watch them when they're on stage.  When we first opened the Nest the children made a sign for us, which hangs near the front door.  It's a simple note card with Nicholas's handwriting, and it states very clearly what we're here to do.  Help people.

We, the other members of Voices of Hope, are grateful not only to the Consoli's, but to every parent that brings their child and makes them a part of the VOH family. It's a special blessing to be able to see the next generation taking up the cause, and it gives us heart. The children remind us every day of why we sing, so that those who come after us will live in a world where cancer has a cure.

Raise Your Voice With Ours!
Have you or a loved one been impacted by cancer? Want to sing along side us? Want to organize a fundraiser for us? Want to ask us to come sing at your fundraiser? Let us know!  We believe that each new voice brings us closer to the cure.

We appreciate your continued support as we aim to increase our fundraising goal every year. Our 2014 fundraising efforts allowed us to donate $62,000 to the Henri and Belinda Termeer Center For Targeted Therapies at Mass General Hospital. We couldn't do it without you!
