Memorial Day brings around a variety of thoughts. What do you think about? School is coming to a close, seasons are changing and we begin to look to summer. Memorial Day has become the turning point, or kick off of summer time and all the activities that go with it. And those things are so much fun! Consider this:
"This is how we know love: Jesus laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters."
1 John 3:16
Memorial Day was originally "Decoration Day" after the Civil War and was established as a time for the nation to flower, or decorate, the graves of those who died in war. In more recent times it has been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in military service.
Our service men and women lay down their lives for us every day without thought or concern of the politics that surround them. They train, study and engage in practices that keep them focused.
Jesus laid down his life without thought or concern of the politics that surrounded him daily. He prayed, studied and engaged in practices that kept him focused.
I'm not suggesting that we should not enjoy friends, family and the hot dog on the grill on Memorial Day and look forward to the days of summer. I am suggesting that there is always time for us to pray, study and engage in practices that will keep our spirits close to God.
Praying for you a gentle summer breeze... |
