Underneath It All

    Underneath It All
Erica Spitzer Rasmussen, Vestments of Valor. Photo by Dean Powell.

"Ingenious," "Outrageous," "Powerful," "Sensual"—these are just a few of the comments from our guests on the night of the opening reception. We were honored to have the curator, Diane Bronstein, and one of the artists, Erica Spitzer Rasmussen, join us for the unveiling at this exhibition’s first venue.

Underwear sells promises: seduction, a slimmer waistline, voluptuousness, confidence and many hidden ones. This exhibition touches on many aspects associated with underwear—gender, body image, sexuality, power, personal history, privacy, technology—with edgy interpretations of traditional craft. The artists show a unique vision—often bending the rules in doing so—and create art with many layers of meaning.

Minnesota Contemporary Quilters

Fortune-It
Peg Lasota, Fortune-It

The members of Minnesota Contemporary Quilters were given a writing challenge—no essays, just write words on a quilt. More than 20 techniques were suggested including digital printing, silk screens, resists (glue or wax), bleach pens, sun printing or machine calligraphy. These quilts are truly worth a thousand words!

Step-Up Discover is a summer employment program and a total learning experience. Experiences on the worksite and in the classroom complement and reinforce each other so youth develop and refine attitudes, values and work habits that contribute to future success. (The City of Minneapolis Employment and Training Program administers and funds the Step-Up Discover Program.) Tamia McLaughlin is the Step-Up Discover intern in the library this summer.

"My name is Tamia McLaughlin. I’m going to be a freshman attending Patrick Henry High School. This summer, working at Textile Center has been great. This place gives me so many different opportunities to learn how to do more things than just library work. I work with the gift shop managers, Carolfaye Meadows and Melisa Wahlstrom, who teach me about retail, and how to get people to buy the artists’ work. I'm learning about the ‘Artist Eye,’ and how to put pieces together and set up shows with the Gallery Manager, Sheryl Schwyhart. I've learned about different fiber arts like crocheting, needle felting and Sumingashi marbling. I sat with Nancy Killmer, the Office Manager, to see how she coordinates the non-profit Textile Center. I met with the new Director, Tim Fleming, and the teachers in the Weaver’s Guild. I worked with Becka Rahn, the Education Director, and sat in a children’s summer sewing class. This job is more than I could ask for and I really enjoy it. Plus, the getting paid part isn’t bad either."

      Author Lunch with Catherine Friend
Sheepish: Two Women, Fifty Sheep, and Enough Wool to Save the Planet

What do you do when you love your farm, but it doesn’t love you? After 15 years of farming, Catherine Friend is tired. After all, while shepherding is one of the oldest professions, it’s not getting any easier. The number of sheep in America has fallen by 90 percent in the last 90 years. But just as Catherine thinks it’s time to hang up her shepherd’s crook, she discovers that sheep might be too valuable to give up. What ensues is a funny, thoughtful romp through the history of our woolly friends and a lesson about the importance of small farms and how each one of us—and the planet—would benefit from being very sheepish indeed. Sponsored by Textile Center Pat O’Connor Library and Weaver’s Guild of Minnesota.

Bring your own lunch. Coffee, lemonade and cookies are provided.

    Lecture at MIA

Visit the MIA for the lecture “Subversive Stitches: Domestic Embroidery and the Art of Reading in Early Modern England” by Nicole LaBouff. The golden age of English embroidery coincided with successive waves of religious reform, the beginning of “the scientific revolution,” late humanism and the diffusion of printed texts and literacy. Yet needlework is often regarded as a uniquely feminine and domestic practice that was isolated from these broader cultural movements. This lecture reinterprets a famous set of embroideries jointly produced by Mary Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick, alongside related examples, demonstrating the ways in which the needle arts supported women’s reading of religious, classical and scientific texts during a pivotal phase in history. As seen from this vantage point, the needle emerges as a tool of understanding and decorative furnishings as material manifestations of thought. This is the Mary Ann Butterfield Memorial Lecture. To reserve tickets, call 612-870-6323.

$10, $5 MIA members. Free to members of the Decorative Arts Affinity Group
