Chatting With The Commodore

Since I first set out in search of a local women's sailing organization last year, I have spent much time on the effort which has evolved into today's WSA-OC. Sometimes, truth be told, a bit too much time, and then...I have a weekend like this last one where I got to be out on the water enjoying sunshine, steady winds and new friends in the DWYC Charity Regatta. The experiences I've had over the past few months meeting new people and learning from some of the best local sailors in Orange County, would not be possible if not for WSA-OC. The last few days reminded me why many of us are working so hard to make WSA-OC thrive. It is my sincere hope that my experience is shared by every member of this group. Like with most things in life, the more you put in, the more you get out. If you want to meet other members and expand your sailing opportunities, get involved; join a committee, let us know your secret talents, suggest an idea for a program. As always, your feedback and suggestions are welcome.

The June meeting
had something for everyone. For the racers Judy-Rae Karlsen, WSA-OC member and Program Director for
Sea Gals, gave a
presentation about the
Long Beach Sailing Foundation
's fleet of the only 11 identical Catalina-37's in the world.

Linda Elias Memorial Women's One-Design (LEMWOD)
Challenge, where 11 t
eams with all-women crews compete in windward-leeward races over 3-days in Long Beach.
For the new(er) sailors, WSA-OC members Vicki Sweet and Monique Vigeant gave a "Welcome Aboard" presentation. Their informative and funny presentation
covered how to be a helpful crew member, personal safety, what to wear, what to have in your sail bag, seasickness, sailboat vocabulary and
basic
knots. According to Vicki and Monique, the three most important rules of boating are:

- Keep water out of the boat
- Keep people on the boat
- Don't hit anything hard
The Physics of Sailing Explained was recommended as a great resource.

Just in time for our inaugural WSA Catalina sail in July, Marc Hughston will be the featured speaker at our July 7th
 general meeting. His topic:
Anchoring At Catalina: No Moorings? No Problem!
If you have ever worried about whether moorings would be available at Catalina and wondered about your options, this presentation is for you. Don't let the availability of moorings impact your cruising plans! Marc will cover the best anchorages at Catalina including anchoring techniques for narrow coves, sloping anchorages, and in strong winds that are effective at Catalina, the Northern Channel Islands, and around the world.

2015 Around Catalina
regatta.

WSA-OC is hoping to field a race team to compete in the 2015 LEMWOD Challenge. Since there are only 11 all-women teams able to participate WSA-OC needs to act quickly to ensure our team is entered.
In order to compete, the team needs to have at least nine, but not more than 11 crew members.
Currently, we are compiling a list of people who are interested in participating. Email us with what (if any) position you are interested in or if you are interested in serving as Boat Boss.

WSA-OC member and Turtle Rally co-founder, Bill McNamara is inviting all WSA members to participate in
the 2015 Turtle Rally June 26th-28th. The "rally" is designed to introduce novice racers to the sport in a fun, non-competitive manner.
Rally participants "start" from Huntington Beach pier and "finish" at Two Harbors in Catalina with a happy hour celebration at the historic Isthmus Yacht Club.
Sailors of all abilities are welcome. Sail numbers not required.
