August's Stellar Site

Our Stellar Site for August is the Meriter Center for Perinatal Care. Since their start in 2008, MCPC has enrolled 228 women in First Breath and in 2013 they added My Baby & Me. Since then, 41 women have been screened and 2 women have been enrolled in My Baby & Me. Way to go, Meriter Center for Perinatal Care!

September 9th is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness Day

On September 9, 1999, the first International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Day was observed. The date 9/9 was chosen to serve as a reminder that all forms of FASD are completely preventable if a woman does not consume alcohol during the nine months of pregnancy.

Yet, alcohol-exposed pregnancies continue to be a leading cause of birth defects and intellectual disabilities in the United States, and individuals with an FASD are often unrecognized or misdiagnosed, even as adults.

What can you do to spread awareness?

Become a My Baby & Me Provider
Spread these important health messages:

There is no safe time, safe amount or safe kind of alcohol to drink during pregnancy.
Any alcohol that a pregnant woman consumes is passed along to her baby.
Alcohol use during pregnancy is the leading preventable cause of birth defects.

Regional Practice Sessions

This year local experts will share information and research on the science of addiction. We've changed the format of the provider practice. Instead of role playing, we'll be using video examples of counseling sessions to critique and provide feedback on, allowing the group to discuss how they handle resistant clients and challenging situations.
