Announcement from LBJ National Historic Park:

In 2005, the National Park Service consulted with numerous entities including the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Research Center and Texas A&M University, to prepare a restoration plan for the Johnson Settlement Area.

NPS and Bit Thicket Fire Office developed a fire management plan based upon those recommendations. The objective is to restore the site to a pre-European, mixed-grass prairie with isolated native trees.

Prescribed fire is identified as the best treatment method for control of exotic grasses and promotion of native grasses.

February or March 2015, if favorable conditions exist, initiate a prescribed fire on the entire 12-acre site. Expected duration of operation is 1 day.

Contact LBJ National Historic Park for more details at 830.868.7128 x 235 for more information.
