In the Community

Alfie Kohn will draw upon two of his books, "Feel-Bad Education" and "The Myth of the Spoiled Child."
You Are Cordially Invited!

St. Andrew's invites you to spend the evening with author Alfie Kohn, who will discuss his thoughts on parenting and educating children in the 21st century. Alfie will draw upon two of his books, Feel-Bad Education and The Myth of the Spoiled Child, during his discussion. This two-hour event will include time for Q&A with Alfie, and conclude with a reception and book signing.

When: Wednesday, October 22 at 6:30 pm

Where: Upper School Chapel

Discussion: According to Kohn, educational researchers believe there's a big difference between getting kids to think about their performance in school (that is, how well they're doing) and getting them to think about the learning itself (what they're doing). These orientations often pull in opposite directions, which means that too much emphasis on achievement can reduce children's interest in learning -- and cause them to avoid challenging tasks. When the point is to prove how smart you are, to get a good grade or a high test score, there is less inclination to engage deeply with ideas, to explore and discover. And there are psychological costs as well, as the push to excel takes its toll. In this talk, Alfie Kohn invites us to rethink our basic assumptions about competition, school success, and the relationship between our long-term goals for our kids and how we're actually raising and teaching them.

Head of School Sean Murphy, Lower School Head Kama Bruce, and Middle School Head Alice Nezzer will be hosting two parent information sessions prior to Alfie Kohn's visit. This is an opportunity to learn more about the school's perspective on learning and performance in school as it relates to Mr. Kohn's vision.  Invitations will be emailed soon for the following two dates:

Monday, October 20, 11:30-12:30 pm in the Rollins Library (light lunch will be served)
Tuesday, October 21, 8:00-9:00 am in the Rollins Library (coffee and light breakfast will be served)

Frishman Running with Joy
Cross-country runner Daniel Frishman ('15) was tapped by sports writer Rick Cantu of the Austin American-Statesman to discuss his success on the trail. It comes as no suprise that Daniel credits Upper School Cross-Country coach Gilbert Tuhabonye with teaching him to "run with joy." An excerpt of Rick's interview with Daniel follows, and can be read in full on the St. Andrew's News section here.

Marshman Receives "Game Ball" Nod
Sophomore quarterback Evan Marshman received the Austin American-Statesman's "Game Ball" honor on Sept. 29, for leading the Crusaders to a 47-7 victory over San Marcos Academy on Sept. 26. The Homecoming crowd at Beck stadium watched Marshman throw for 205 yards, rush for 57 yards, and send four balls into the end zone for a truly spectacular win. To read the full synopsis of the Homecoming game, click this link. Congratulations to Evan Marshman for this great honor, and to the entire Varsity Football team for an outstanding performance!

Inaugural College Admissions Panel Gives Key Insights

St. Andrew's first-ever College Admissions Panel was held on October 2. We invited admissions officers from Texas Christian University, Texas Tech University, Smith College, Trinity University, and Southwestern University to speak to our 10th and 11th graders, and their parents, on the subject of "demystifying" the college admissions process.  The panelists spoke about:
  • How admissions applications are reviewed in their offices
  • How colleges evaluate the rigor of a student's curriculum
  • Emerging trends and the future direction of college admissions
  • How students can stand out in a positive way in the application process
  • How they determine whether or not a student will "survive academically and thrive personally" at their institutions

The panelists concluded with some words of advice on finding the right fit for college:

  • The college search can and should be a time for self-reflection
  • Students need to visit campuses to get a real feel for the place
  • Students should consult a variety of resources as they conduct their college search
  • Authenticity is key - on the part of the student and the colleges/universities

The final word of the evening came from an admissions officer who said, "Oh, yes, and have fun with the process!  It is supposed to be fun!"

This event was added to an already buzzing college counseling season.

In September, 82 reps from universities across the country came to campus to meet exclusively with St. Andrew's students (32 reps in just one week alone!). St. Andrew's also coordinated a college fair (in conjunction with St. Stephen's, St. Michael's, and Regents) which welcomed over 150 college and university reps. With all this activity, St. Andrew's students are surely getting a head-start on the college application process. View St. Andrew's college rep calendar here. Thank you Elizabeth Guice and Chad Fulton for contributing this article.

Breakthrough Your Saturday

Learning never ceases at St. Andrew's, not even at 8:00 am on a Saturday morning!  That's when about two dozen St. Andrew's Upper School students welcomed approximately 60 dedicated middle school students from the local Austin area to campus. This fall cohort of 7th graders came to St. Andrew's as part of the Breakthrough Austin program.  Breakthrough is an organization that seeks to address educational disparities in low-income communities by providing ambitious students with enhanced academic support.  To learn more about how Breakthrough is partnering with us to help some of Austin's sharpest young minds, please contact [email protected]

Blessing of the Pets

On Friday, Oct. 3, St. Andrew's students celebrated the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi with a special morning chapel service. Students then joined parents and family pets outside, where they sang songs, heard a story about St. Francis, and had their pets blessed with a special prayer by Chaplains Ashley Brandon and Reverend Rob Leacock.

'Quizlet' Keeps Competition (and Teaching) Going

Remember when taking a quiz meant having a spare piece of paper, a sharpened pencil, and some elbow room? Fast forward to Greg Mele's 7th grade Latin class, in which he uses an online learning tool called "Quizlet." Greg explains, "Students practice vocabulary, grammar and cultural content in a variety of learning modalities, from digital flashcards to creating their own tests to competitive games, such as 'Scatter.' The students compete against themselves, their classmates and other classes on the 'Scatter' mode on Quizlet. After each contest, Quizlet automatically ranks the student's score compared to all others who have played with a certain learning set.  I've created over 140 sets and 4,400 terms for the Middle School Latin students to practice, learn and compete with. They can also download the free app onto their phones and practice, play and create wherever they are and whenever they are inclined to learn." Thank you Greg Mele for contributing to this article.

Question: What is "The Big Gulp"?

For the answer, you'll have to find a 6th-grader who participated in the Environmental Leadership Program at Mo Ranch last week.  During this two-night, three-day orientation trip, 6th-grade students participated in a number of activities designed to create a team atmosphere, promote leadership skills, and build community and camaraderie amongst students, faculty, and staff.  Students participated in high elements (zip lines), low elements (outdoor problem solving), went canoeing, swam in the Guadalupe River, played games, and touched snakes and turtles at the Mo Ranch reptile center. A good time was had by all! Thank you

St. Andrew's Celebrates the Classes of 2004 and 2009

St. Andrew's welcomed home graduates from the Classes of 2004 and 2009 for their five- and ten-year class reunions.  Current and former faculty and staff joined our alumni in the Dell Fine Arts Center for a delicious brunch, presentations by our Heads of School, campus tours, and an afternoon at ACL at Zilker Park.  Alumni traveled from around the state to attend and teachers and graduates alike enjoyed reminiscing, touring the new Upper School facilities, and catching up with old friends.  We look forward to seeing them all again at the Alumni Holiday Get-Together on Saturday, December 20th!

Teacher's Corner

Nicole Williams: 2nd Grade Teacher and LS Counselor

For Nicole Williams, her reason for moving to Texas in 2003 was pretty simple: "to escape snow-filled recess!" After spending 20 years teaching in Frederick County, MD, Nicole was ready for a change of scene and temperature. During her second year teaching at St. Andrew's, she went to New York for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) training. It was there that she truly "fell in love with the 'whole child' approach to learning." Nicole explains, "When a student feels connected to their teacher and their classmates, when they understand their emotions and feel that those emotions are being honored, that creates a great learning environment. Emotional stress can really hinder learning." This inspirational moment motivated Nicole to become a part of the SEL team at St. Andrew's, and pursue a master's degree in counseling from St. Edward's University.  Nicole's internship with a private counseling practice gave her additional experience serving children, teens, and families. Nicole loves watching her students shine during Back-to-School night, when they dress formally, greet parents outside, give tours of the halls, and present their projects: "The evening is all about them, letting them show what they can do, and they're amazing." When she's not in the classroom, in a counseling session, or performing research for her grant, Nicole loves to stay active with running, yoga, and Barre classes.
