A Note from Hailey:   "For those who don't know me, my name is Hailey Gablinske and I'm a senior at Portsmouth High School. Four months ago, I came home to the heartbreaking news that my mom had been diagnosed with lung cancer. It was a long road watching my mom suffer through countless chemotherapy treatments, radiation, blood transplants, and several other procedures. As her only child and the only other person living with her, it ripped me apart to see her deteriorate day by day. As the months progressed, the cancer found it's way to four other places in her body: liver, spine, blood, and brain. Up until a month ago when she was admitted to Rhode Island Hospital, my mom lived without home care and tended to herself and her disease as much as she humanly could. Needless to say, she was one hell of a fighter. Although she endured an amount of suffering that most of us will never grasp, not once did she complain or allow anyone to pity her. On December 5th, the disease got the best of her body and I lost my best friend. Although the process was more than painful to watch, I am beyond thankful for the nurses and doctors at Rhode Island Hospital who guided my mom through the last two weeks of her life. These professionals worked to make my mom as comfortable as possible while also fighting for her until the very end. In memory of my mom, I will be hosting a Zumba Fundraiser in order to give back to the Rhode Island Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center. My hopes for this senior project is to raise Lung Cancer Awareness by having fun and giving back to a good cause as Zumba was one of her favorite things to do. All proceeds will be donated to the Rhode Island Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center.
