DIWALI MELA 2014-PHOTOS

Dear Friends,

Tonight at 7:30 pm there will be a Jyotirlinga archana in the Sri Venkateswara Temple.  In this yagna, deepams are lit in the form of a Shiva linga. I think this jyotir linga is one of the most beautiful things to see in this world. Gazing at it, one's sins are burned away. Children and families are invited to light the deepams.

This week, the Temple needs:
  • 150 water bottles - Sandwich Seva, Sunday 8am
  • Chips packets for Sunday seva - 3 boxes, 150 packets
  • Raisins and nuts - for prasad packets, Baba Temple.
  • Paper Plates for kitchen prasad (Earth-friendly)-8 inch Chinet or Dixie paper plates (no styrafoam please)
  • Sesame oil for the oil lamps in the Sri Venkateswara Temple or Baba Temple
  • Prasad for Thursday - to offer to Sri Sai, at 6:30pm & 8pm.
With loving regards,
Craig Sastry
FROM SAI BABA

Baba's Simhasanam-Guru Poornima 2013 If the name of 'Sai' is recited and repeated, the sins of listening to evil are destroyed.  Those who believe my words are fulfilled.  Let not your mind be volatile.  Be firm and faithful.  Simply reading my leelas is not enough.  Grasping their moral and practicing is important.

Cosmic Story:  Kunti's Prayer

During the Mahabharata war, Kunti prayed to Krishna to protect her sons.  After the war, He brought all her five sons, the Pandavas back in healthy condition.  He asked her "Mother, is there anything else I can do for you?"  She said "Oh Krishna, I feel you are in front of me, behind me, and by my side at all times!  Please keep bringing me these troubles so that I am always thinking of You!"  This is such an unusual prayer that it became known as Kunti's prayer.

When we encounter troubles and difficulties, it is best to thank God for them, rather than complain about them.  God is the master sculptor.  To find the perfection within the block of stone, the sculptor has to hit it and remove excess material.  If we never encounter difficulties, we get egoistic and forget God.  Only when we have problems do we  examine ourselves and pray to God with complete concentration.  Therefore, it is best to thank God for difficulties.

As an example, In 1990, Jill and I were living on one of the most remote places on Earth, the island of Kauai.  It is at the northwest end of the Hawaiian island chain.  We liked to body surf in the warm Pacific ocean, but were not very smart about how we did it.

One time, we got into the ocean, and noticed it was a little rough.  Coming in after an hour of swimming, the ocean had gotten very disturbed.  Huge waves were breaking on the shore, where we had entered.  The waves were breaking with tremendous force on the shoreline, and were as tall as a man.  If we did not precisely time our re-entry to the shore, the waves would break on us with thousands of pounds of force, slamming us against the sand.  We had to rush in during the few seconds when no waves were breaking.  It was difficult to time re-enter, as we were being pulled in and out with the action of the waves.  It was a life or death situation.  It was not possible for me to help Jill, as I was struggling just to save myself.

At that period in my life, I never thought of God.  I was striving for Self Realization through long meditations daily.  But during this life or death situation, I remembered how to pray to God! I made sincere, concentrated prayers, and would promise Him anything for our safe return.  This reminded me that only when we are in the deepest trouble will we resort to God with 100% concentration.  Through the grace of God, somehow we managed to get into shore safely. It seems a pity that only in the times of deepest emergency do we pray with such sincerity and concentration. - Craig Sastry
