Dear library patrons and friends,

Windows have been installed, masonry work is underway, and our new library is finally weather-tight. The granite sill-base, brick, windows, and clerestories are particularly stunning. We are working on solidifying our finishes and furniture list and should have some final images to share in our next newsletter. In the meantime, our dedicated staff haven't skipped a beat on library service, all the while, adding weekly staff meetings to their schedule to prepare the logistics of a move. We have a terrific line-up of programs this winter, including a wonderful monthly slow-cooking class.

We owe a giant thank you to our energized Friends of the Library, who have spoiled our staff with Holiday caroling and gift-baskets, and have made it possible for us to continue to expand our programming through generous funding. Thank you also, to everyone who made year-end contributions to the Friends of the Library. We hope you will continue to give generously through the year. We count on all of you!

Warmly,

Jill Dugas Hughes

WAR:  Winter Film Series
Opens Tuesday, Jan. 13

The Library's winter film series, opening on Jan. 13 and running for six Tuesday evenings, presents a selection of the great war films of all time. All screenings start at 7 p.m. and please note: these programs are for adults. (We close the children's room shortly before each film begins and bring a cart full of the best new materials upstairs for our young patrons.)

Here's the lineup:

Jan. 13: Gallipoli

Director Peter Weir's powerful drama of World War I unfolds with uncommon beauty and immediacy. (Australia, 1981)

Jan. 20: Good Morning, Vietnam

Robin Williams' virtuoso performance in this film, directed by Barry Levinson and set in the early days of America's involvement in the Vietnam conflict, is not to be missed. (US, 1987)

Jan. 27: Atonement

A tragic romance set during World War II, this film from director Joe Wright is both wrenching and beautiful. (UK, 2007)

Feb. 3: M*A*S*H

Rude, lewd and crass, this black comedy of martini-swigging surgeons amidst the gore and inanities of the Korean war retains its satiric bite. Directed by Robert Altman. (US, 1970)

Feb. 10: Glory

A stirring tribute to the men of the Civil War's 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, this film from director Edward Zwick boasts remarkable cinematography and fine performances. (US, 1989)

Feb. 17: Master and Commander

Director Peter Weir gives us a ripping seafaring tale set during the Napoleonic Wars, full of salt, sweat and swagger.

Book Group Meets
The Edgartown Library book group meets on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. to discuss A Walk in the Woods, by Bill Bryson. Already a classic, this book is Bryson's story of the Appalachian Trail, and of his adventures there.

We have copies of this book available at the library desk, and gatherings of the book group are open to all. The book club, led by Director, Jill Dugas Hughes, meets monthly.
Opera Club Meets
Sunday, Jan. 25

The Edgartown Library continues its monthly gatherings of the Opera Club, for all those who love (and would like to learn more about) the art of classical singing.

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, the club will gather to enjoy a screening of Carmen, as filmed live at the Metropolitan Opera. Richard Eyre's stunning production of Bizet's classic stars Elina Garanca in the title role and Roberto Alagna as her tormented lover, Don Jose. Conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin.

All adults welcome to this free program.
Mark Your Calendar: Special Programs Ahead

Virginia Munro's inaugural Adventures in Slow Cooking class this month was a popular (and delicious) hit, presenting her recipe for chicken curry that you can still pick up if you ask her nicely at the library desk. In her next class, at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, her dish is a Boeuf Bourguignon, adapted for the slow cooker from an original recipe by Julia Child. Space is limited for this adult program, so please call the library to register.

Donna Blackburn's Cake of the Month Club continues to be popular, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, she'll teach  how to build a quilt-themed cake. Participants in this class bring their own 9-inch layer cakes, and the library provides all frosting materials. Again, space is limited, so call ahead.

Our knitting group continues to gather every Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. -- and no advance signup is necessary. Just bring your latest project along and join in.
January in the Children's Room

Beginning this month, we have a new regular time for our weekly story hour programs in the Children's Room: every Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m.

Free drop-in crafts activities are held every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. this month. We're offering a special program on Jan. 24, a Snowflake Party with two short films, refreshments and games. The fun starts at 3 p.m.

And on Jan. 30, as part of a program sponsored by the MV Library Association, we'll have a special guest in the Children's Room: the popular character of children's author Anne Dewdney: Llama Llama.

Join us for a story hour at 3:30 that Friday afternoon, and stay to have your pictures taken with Llama Llama.
Bring Donations for the Food Pantry
And Erase Your Overdue Fines

It's that time of year when the Edgartown Library holds its annual drive for the Island Food Pantry. If you bring a gift of nonperishable food to the library this January and February, we'll erase any fines on your cards relating to overdue materials. Please note, we can't erase fines for damaged or lost materials. And please be generous with your gifts to this important Island program.
