Camp Blackshear: 150th Commemoration

The Pierce County Historical and Genealogical Society will host Camp Blackshear's 150th Anniversary Commemorative Event on Thursday, December 4 beginning at 6 PM in the auditorium of the historic Presbyterial Institute (now the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center - 705 College Avenue).

From November of 1864 to January of 1865, approximately 5,000 Union prisoners of war were brought to Blackshear. More than twenty men lost their lives here. Join the Historical Society in honoring and remembering these American soldiers.

This event is free to the public and will include a lecture by Barry L. Brown who is the heritage tourism specialist for the Georgia Department of Economic Development. His book Crossroads of Conflict is based on a comprehensive survey of sites identified by the Georgia Civil War Commission in 2000 and covers 350 historic sites in detail, bringing the experience of the war to life. In addition, Lance Greene, Professor of Anthropology at Georgia Southern University, will be on hand to discuss the recent archaeological study conducted at Camp Blackshear. He will explain the processes used and the discoveries made at the prison camp. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the Camp Blackshear artifacts found during this dig and explore the importance of further study on this important historic site. For more information, contact Angela Manders, Historical Society President, or email [email protected]

Christmas on the Satilla: Monday, December 8

"Christmas on the Satilla" is the theme of this year's Christmas Parade.

Many downtown businesses will stay open after the parade for your holiday shopping pleasure. Santa will return to downtown for photos taken by the talented Jennifer Carter Johnson who will be set up in the old Morel's Pharmacy building (corner of SW Central and Main St.), and local choirs will get us in the Christmas spirit with the singing of carols.

Join us for a wonderful Christmas Celebration made possible by our signature sponsors, Flash Foods, Georgia Power, Eagle Station, McDonalds, and the Main Street Program!

We are encouraging all downtown merchants to remain open and enter into the spirit of the occasion by decorating your store fronts and offering parade specials! Members not located in the downtown area are welcome to set up along the parade route. Call for a spot!

Merchants, call or email us to let us know how you plan to participate, and we will get the word out for you!

Ribbon Cutting: Mary Fran's Salon

We appreciate the large turnout for Mary Fran's grand opening and ribbon cutting. Mary Frances Grissom enjoyed meeting other chamber members and was overwhelmed by the community support.

Many guests won wonderful door prizes, but Mary Lott Walker was the Grand Prize Winner!

Mary Fran's is located at 407 West Carter Avenue, Blackshear. For an appointment, call 843-227-0131.

Member Appreciation Block Party

The Chamber member appreciation block party was a great way to begin the holiday season! All Chamber members and their families were invited to the Fall Block Party which was held in the Northwest block of Central Avenue on Thursday, November 20.

We enjoyed Henry Mackey's sausage dogs and funnel cakes, the member-only discounts and goodies provided by the merchants of Northwest Central, and the sensational singing duo, Beau+Luci.

Let's do it again soon!
